I don’t want to blow up my life by going to rehab. I have a very good career, family that loves me and a good relationship despite the drinking… but I feel like I need something more than attending a meeting everyday or talking to strangers online once and then never again. Any ideas on how to find a muse and real person to develop a mentor relationship with. Not had luck with AA sponsors to date.
A lot of good recovering ladies on here. Start friending away. Worse case can your career take a break to get things together if need be? Sometimes getting away from life as we live it now to learn tools helps.
I blew up my life (or thought I was) by going to rehab. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
There is a lot of stigma with alcoholism that I need to avoid at work. I hear what you are saying … but it isn’t painful enough..,. Yet
Have you considered intensive outpatient?
You are close to me if you want to have coffee sometime. I’m going to try Women For Sobriety meetings. Reach out if you’re interested.
Sounds awesome! I would love that.
Good idea.. one that has worked in the past
There are people who quite without going to rehab. It all boils down to how much you want to stop. Throw yourself a bone nobody else will. Not a magic one at least...
Thanks… I will try as many strategies as I can to avoid rehab.. I do want to quit and I will
If you truly want to you will.
I am a Senior Level Mechanical Engineer. When I decided to go to rehab, I thought it was the end of my career. My employer was super cool when I told them. It’s stigma for a while, but once you get some clean time, you start crushing it and get the super power of sobriety. Not trying to talk you into anything, just saying that employers prefer to help someone get fixed over dealing with someone once they become a problem.
I may or may not owe 75k in medical bills. Rehab is a wonderful idea, but ya know, I could also pay all this off on 15 years, oh, I'll be over 50 by then.
I put work first in all my sobriety.it takes a toll.get help.the older we get it get harder.then no hope.then what.put yourself first.
May be we need to change.
I was in the same position. I’m in a leadership position at the executive level. I eventually bit the bullet, went to treatment, and I’m grateful that I did.
Sometimes we have to accept that we can’t do it all at the same time. I tried quitting while still going to work and being a husband/father. I couldn’t, and I had to accept that, then I had to take the time to go get better so that I could be the best employee, father, and husband that I could be. I’d do the same thing again in that position ten times out of ten.
I’m a forensic accountant. I have an old school family. I was in your shoes. I went to rehab and nobody fired or disowned me. Best of luck to you.
Just an update.. I am 8 days sober and was feeling pretty good. A few nights I got my normal craving at 5pm after work. Yesterday went to get COVID booster and now feeling sorry for myself. This is worse than a hangover.
Obviously if I cAnt stay sober this time I will have to bite the bullet and truly consider rehab
Right????
One day at a time and keep reaching out here. Rehab or not rehab can be a tough one. I haven’t been but two of my sponsees have. One other thing to consider and I have done this…there are relapse prevention specialists you can work with in some counseling practices. Hang in there. Keep us posted.
