I have a unique situation. I have 2 special needs children which I love wholeheartedly, but compassion fatigue triggers the drinking at times. I often feel isolated because no one understands what I'm going through unless they have special needs kids.
That must be overwhelming. Is there a support group that you can join? How old are they?
No excuses to stay sober. Get plugged into a program. There are others like you in this world. Keep reaching out.

Hi Lyn, that’s a lot on your plate! Have you heard of the Caregivers Space? I’ve heard of others really enjoying that space and feeling supported. Also, the book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski might be helpful. Recovery support groups are also really helpful in keeping us on the sobriety support path. One gentle suggestion, many people have very similar feelings to what you have, even though they do not have special needs kids, because situations and experiences translate. It may not be the exact same, but some are working several jobs and feel overwhelmed, some are caring for a family member, and I’m sure there are a variety of other experiences that translate. I suggest looking for the similarities rather than the differences in order to encourage connection rather than separation. Good luck on your journey!
Wow! Thanks so much for the resources and for your perspective.
