He's depressed. He spends all his extra money on beer. He needs shoes, clothes, and socks. He won't spend money on those items. He feels he's worthless.

Some times the hardest value to get others to see is the value within themselves. Illustrate his good to him until he sees it
It’s a cycle. The beer depresses you and then the depression makes you want to numb with beer. Offer a hand to help but with most alcoholics it has to happen in their time and on their terms. We are a bullheaded and obsessive type.
