I have two weeks of sobriety today. After 30 years

I have two weeks of sobriety today. After 30 years of blackout binge drinking I feel like I’ve finally reached the crossroads in my life. I’ve known I’ve had a problem for at least 20 years and I have “quit” drinking probably 50 times. The last 4 years things have taken a turn for the worse. After going through a divorce and being alone drinking became heavier and more frequent and then an injury 6 months ago led to a couple of surgeries and a long leave of absence from work. This pretty much turned me into a daily drinker and 9 times out of 10 blacked out by days end. In the last 6 weeks I remember going to bed and feeling like I may not wake up this time. I finally decided to do something about it. I went through a few days of severe anxiety, depression, shaking and insomnia. Anxiety still comes and goes. I know I can’t do this alone, that’s why I’m here. I’m such a recluse it has always been hard for me to reach out. I’m a believer. I’ve cried out to God more times than I can count, only falling back into doing things my way. Anyhow, here I am 14 days in. A quote from Shawshank Redemption comes to mind. “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”

I choose to live!

I've been there man. It was 20+ for me, but I am over two years sober now. It gets easier and so much better. Keep your head up, brother.

Hey Brian, congrats on 14 days brother! That is huge! For the alcoholic, even going 1 day without picking up is a huge deal! I would suggest downloading the Meeting Guide app. It shows you all the meetings in the area wherever you are in the world! Find a place where you feel comfortable and a sponsor who has what you want. Listen and follow suggestions from those who have come before you. If you do this, I can guarantee your life will change brother! God is good!

Our stories sound quite similar. Thank you for the words of encouragement. I have just reached a point in my life where I wake up disgusted with myself and the cycle would start all over again. It has only gotten much worse and I know it doesn’t magically get better. I’m ready to live sober.

I can completely relate. I would wake up feeling like a complete asshole for drinking and being absolutely hammered in front of my daughter/spouse/neighbors. I half promised myself I wouldn't do that again but I pretty much knew I would. You may not believe you can quit but you can Brian. It took me years to make the choice to see a therapist who specializes in addiction. I went through 3 before I found one that helped change my life. If you want live free and sober ask for help, either through AA or therapy. I wish I had done it sooner. You got this man!!

Congrats on 14 days. I made a vision board so every morning I wake up and read some encouragement. Ie don’t look back you are not going that way. At any point you get to change the ending of your story. Enjoy waking my not hungover and remembering that night before. If weather permits start getting outside abs a good amount of vitamin D. You may want to adopt a pet
