I haven’t drank, and I don’t want to, but I’m clinging to every distraction I can find. I cannot stop checking social media or texts. I can tell that I am trying to replace drinking with something else unhealthy instead of just accepting and dealing with things. Any advice would be appreciated
This is where I find my sober community fulfilling, talks and actually out doing fun things. Acceptance is a big word in your post, finding true acceptance can be a tough road, my acceptance came at a tough price. Good news is you don’t have to suffer the complete demoralization many of us did. You are on a journey and I’m sure you’ll find your way. Your worth this just keep plugging away and the plug in the jug.
Cooking a homemade meal. Keeps your hands and mind occupied and it's a healthy satisfying reward with the gift of cleaning up the kitchen
Yes reach out on here and talk to people, no way unhealthy.. drinking was
I know that everybody wants to find an alternative these days but all I can tell you is I got sober in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. For my first year I practically went to meetings every day. I got a sponsor and I took the steps and somehow or another the obsession to drink was removed.
Life didn't get easier. I just got better and handling life one day at a time without picking up a drink. This app is a great app but no way does it replace authentic one-on-one human interaction. Not for me anyway.
I also got a lot of phone numbers and just started using the phone all the time to talk with people. A lot of the people that I spoke with have been sober for a lot of years and were retired so they had a lot of time on their hands to talk. I will be eternally grateful for their support. Talking on the phone is still one of the best tools out there today.
Once things start to balance out and you get some clarity in your life then you can look for different Hobbies and what not to fill in the spaces of your life that used to be occupied by a bottle.
The problem with trying to find something to replace our drinking habit is nothing really fixes our problem. It's like when you get a horse thief sober, what do you have? A sober horse thief.
Drinking was only a symptom of our problem. We have to get down to causes and conditions if we are going to be able to go on living and remain sober.
That’s what I’ve been thinking. I don’t want an alternative really, I haven’t really figured out why I was blacking out every night. I have some ideas, but there was no one specific trauma that caused it. I’ve been trying to journal to figure it out, but i haven’t gotten there. I want to start therapy but I’m in a lot of debt and I’m unsure if I can handle it right now financially.
I can tell you why you had blackouts. Alcohol impairs your body’s ability to create and store new memories.
Different people are affected by alcohol differently. Weight, gender, how much, etc are only a few of possible factors. The good news is they are only temporary. Once your body burns the alcohol It's ability to start creating and storing memories is revived. The other good news is that you never have to drink or have blackouts again.
