I honestly have no idea how to get a sponser. I have been going to meetings every weekend and I know I’m supposed to ask around and find one but I have so much social anxiety to do that. Ugh
Hi Ellie, when I know my social anxiety is going to get in the way, I practice my words before the event in front of a mirror over and over again. This seems to help me because I’m not fumbling over my words, I just have to get the guts to walk up to the person.
Great post Ellie. So honest and so real! I went without a sponsor for a long time because I couldn’t find the courage to ask someone. I think it’s fear and insecurity! Maybe it was also a little that I kinda didn’t want to commit to doing the steps. Anyway, fast forward way too many years to count lol. I’m a 56 year old grown a$$ man, and I can’t tell you how hard it was to ask someone to be my sponsor once again. I heard a guy speak during my second week sober and just knew I had to ask him to sponsor me. I had every intention of asking after the meeting. I actually said hi afterwards, but I couldn’t get those darn words to come out of my mouth! I literally went to my car and was about to go home. I was feeling horrible for not asking him. I psyched myself up, and asked god for the courage and strength. I went back to look for him, and fortunately he was still there. I felt like I was a kid asking a girl out on a first date lol. Somehow I got those words out of my mouth. He actually said yes!! I felt so good. It was a big step for me. I was desperate enough to push thru my silly fears. You can do it too!! Ask for strength and courage. I’d love if you could report back when you do it. You’ve got team Loosid with you! You definitely can do this with our help

Try beginner meeting if that helps
I would say don’t get hung up on finding a sponsor. Just show up for the fellowship.
Ahhh, ever try meetings during the week also? The more you reach out the more you get in return.
You don’t need much of an approach. If you run into someone that you think would be good, just ask one simple question. “Do you sponsor people?” That’s probably all the kickstart the conversation needs. Seriously. Choose wisely though. Pick someone who is really solid and confident (not cocky) in their own recovery. And has some decent sober time too.
I fired a sponsor after my first year. That was hard especially because it was nothing blatant. I just needed different things in my sobriety. Like I was wanting next level recovery I guess. We are still really good AA friends.
Normally u see same people in meeting and hear their story and feel same feels or expreniced and then when say need sponsor they hands raise u notice then walk to person they love to help nothing stress about it
It don’t have to be some one at your meetings. A sponsor can be anyone on here. Some one that is willing to be there when you need advice or talk too
Take your time.my first year was meetings every day.
If it helps you to feel more at ease and confident, please know that being a sponsor is very important for maintaining sobriety. So whom ever you choose, you are also helping. Sponsoring a newcomer is very beneficial to the old-timer
