I jumped in headfirst into drugs and alcohol before the age of 15. I'm now 43, 4 years alcohol free. Quit cigarettes a year ago and pot free since January. My brain continues to heal. Neuroplasticity is an amazing phenomenon of our biological resilience. Ten years ago, I couldn't imagine a world without alcohol. I had to sacrifice my social network, but it's brought me closer to what's really important to me (family, especially my kids). I was a successful machinist, but as my drinking took presidence over everything thing else. I began drinking early in the morning and even on lunch break and during school breaks when I was in my apprenticeship. I was bouncing around between jobs and unemployed for about three years. Getting sober was just the beginning. Taking steps to deal with my mental health is a ongoing process, but with the right tools and support. I believe anyone can achieve clarity and success. I've held a good job in my career field for almost two years now. Only calling in sick one day (something I thought impossible previously).
We f***ing got this, is the message in Morse code on a bracelet given to me by my mother. I take this sentiment to heart and believe it rings true for everyone struggling with addiction.
