I just left my first in person meeting

I just left my first in person meeting. It was not what I expected.

Was it better?

In what way? Just curious because I had the same experience.

No not better.

People were seated at tables and I think a lot of them knew each other. Someone asked me to sign a sheet on four lines. I think I signed something saying he was there. The people I sat with were nice. They filled me in on the basics. They were out of welcome packets. I got invited to a festival tomorrow. I’m still lost.

What was your experience like?

Different meeting have different vibes and personalities. I have ones I love and ones I would never go back to. Don’t let it stop you - try different meetings at different times…locations. Keep coming back!

Yeah, some meetings have cliques, just like anywhere else. Plus just keep in mind these people are probably regulars and we regulars can come off as “clicky”, but we don’t always mean to be.

That’s awesome you went to your first in person meeting. I’d definitely suggest going to other ones different nights and in different towns. Some are topic discussion, speaker or step meetings and you get different people usually at each so hopefully you’ll find one that stands out from the rest. I go to meetings on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday twice and Sunday. It wasn’t till the Friday and Sunday ones till I found my favorite groups

My first meeting was uncomfortable. I didn’t know the routine. I didn’t know anyone. I was nervous. They all knew each other. The guy chairing mumbled. But they were kind. They tried talking to me after. My defenses were way up but they asked me to come back. They got my phone number and text me the next morning to check that I was ok. And when I went back a few nights later they remembered my name and seemed glad I came back.

Like people have said, different meetings are different. I went to an NA meeting once and it was was more intense. Much younger. Less scripted. More raw. I’ve also been to meetings in a psych ward/rehab. Also intense. Scared people who really just needed step 1. They needed hope that they could have this unmanageability right then, but it could get better.

Now that I’m vaxed and more meetings are opening up, my sponsor wants me to check out the circuit. All the big meetings in the huge city I live near. And I will. Though I really have found comfort in my home group.

Good. Glad it went well

Thanks Shonda

I’m going to try an N/A meeting next.

Wow. That was easy. Thank you.

I’m not convinced we have beat covid with delta - icu beds full - non vaccinated. I’m retired with one kidney so I have my guard up. We are fortunate to be living in an age of video virtual meetings. The meetings replace the in person session but can’t replace the fellowship needed outside the meeting.

Thanks for the info on the zoom meeting. Glad I went.
