I’m a huge fan of quit lit! But I just started listening to “The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober” and it’s scaring the bologna outta me
At one point she mentions that the hardest times to stay sober aren’t at parties, they’re when you’re alone because you can drink and nobody would know.
A lot of this book is making me feel called out. I’m proud of my one week but I’m horrified of the idea I’ll forget this feeling eventually and relapse. I may get “Please don’t mess this up” tattooed on my arm. Any ideas for font type?
To thine own self be truth. Keep on walking forward little by little.
Hi Kate, some people need to be scared straight, maybe you're one. I'm also a huge reader of everything. I have not read that but will. It sounds like me. I was a lone drinker but not to hide it.I usually recommend reading Alcohol Explained by William Porter because of it's easy to read and understand. I'm now reading The Adictive Brain. It also explains the brain never forgets and if you drink again eventually you'll wind up right back were you started. AA says ,,"1 Drink is too much but 1000 is never enough". I relapsed 3 times thinking I could.
If it helps you are not alone. Reach out anytime. Best of luck
YES BE PROUD 1 week is the start of the rest of your life. Go for it.
Keep your head up. Try to stay busy. I’m reading unfuck your brain and it’s really good. Maybe check it out.
As a tattoo lover I am loving the tattoo idea. I also have been scared of that same thing. I feel amazing right now but don’t want my brain to trick me into thinking I have it under control. For font type I’m gonna suggest you write it yourself! I have multiple that I sketched myself and then the tattoo artist will clean it up. This way , it’s a message directly from yourself. Feel free to message me whenever!
I love that idea! I actually don’t mind my handwriting so that could be cool lol.
It’s so odd to me that my brain can do that- I can be totally clear and happy in my choice and then my brain pulls the classic “just have one” trick. Which is baffling to fall for even though I clearly know better. Pretty silly. I will definitely reach out if I’m getting one of those thoughts. Please reach out as well! It helps
It’s crazy how we can know that alcohol is killing us, yet still think we can conquer it.
That’s my favorite sober book! I’ve read it twice this year. Definitely made me feel called out too but in a relieving way knowing that other people feel the same way I do. As far as the tattoo, the longer you’re sober the less you will feel you’re going to “mess up” because you get so much stronger. If you haven’t read quit like a woman I’d check that one out too, it touches on how people make it seem as if sober people are weak and at every moment in life are only one drink away from messing up their entire lives again, when in reality if you really learn how to live sober you become stronger than you ever knew and are so far away from failure. Don’t think you need the tattoo girl but either way good luck you’ve got this!
I loved Quit Like A Woman!! And thank you for the encouragement! I do hope that the longer I stay sober the more I can retrain my brain.
It makes sense, but then I hear about people who were sober for like 80 years, had one drink, and died of alcohol poisoning a week later… which is blindingly discouraging lol
I've been trying for a long time to come up with a tattoo idea that I like... that one is pretty straightforward and I like it.
At any rate, keep on keepin' on
