I’m alone on a business trip to Minnesota and almost reached for a bottle yesterday but stopped myself. Any tips on how to stay sober when traveling alone?
Reach out to a person and not the bottle. Someone will be around to chat with you. You started off with the right thing just by posting on here.
Read the big book. Always find answers in there. You got this!
Hi Brad, hope your trip is going alright! I like listening to the happy sober podcast, but really just any book or outlet that will keep you motivated and on a good path.
I find meditation help as well to refocuses yourself. I also like to remind myself of the likelihood that I probably would not have the opportunity if I was still drinking.
Brad, remind yourself of the benefits of sobriety. For example this morning as I was driving to work, I did not have the shakes and the world looked so much brighter and greener. I did not disappoint myself or my family by drinking. Remember the little things. You are a victor not a victim.
Find a gym or meditation center. I know planet fitness is everywhere.
It’s good that you were able to say that. That means part of you wants to Not drink more than to drink. Keep reaching out. Whatever gets you thru the temptation. When it’s over you’ll be proud
Go to a meeting, think about how much of a douchebag you are when you drink. Stay sober.
Do something enjoyable when you get those urges, distract yourself. Call someone first, then go for a walk, go do something you find enjoyable until the temptation passes.
Thank you all so much. It means more than you know
Sobriety podcasts are a great thing to do. Don’t go back to day one. Good luck Brad!
How’s your trip going?
I turn on a recovery podcast, audio book, post on loosid, go to a meeting, call or text a sober friend.
Tell someone. Don’t let those intrusive thoughts linger in your head. Once they’re out, they’re out
Hey Brad! Great that you are reaching out and asking for help! Wish I did that back in 2010 when I started going on my business trips. Looking back now I remember the loneliness I felt sitting up in my room while everyone else was at the hotel bar having fun. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was so anxious and lonely. Not dealing with these feelings got me in so much trouble. Like sh!t you see on Netflix! I became a completely different person when I travelled out of town. Had a second identity, and lived out crazy fantasies and experiences that a sober family man could only dream of. I got sober young and was sober for over 20 years when this new addiction popped up. Anyway, call some friends, go to meetings, get out of your room and maybe see some sights. I’m really happy your reaching out! Wish I knew then what I knew now!
I'm in Minnesota man don't feel too bad. There's not a lot for the sober to do especially if it's not your home. If you get bored try the st Croix river valley or superior if you're near one.
I highly recommend Duluth! But if you are more tourist you could go to the mall of America.
