I’m just past nine months in and I’m starting to

I’m just past nine months in and I’m starting to lose some of my momentum. I’m doing this alone (my family and friends are supportive, but I don’t go to meetings or have a sober community).

I’m open to the idea of meetings but haven’t found a program that meets in my area and appeals to me, so right now I’m trying to think of alternative methods of motivating myself.

Mainly I’m looking for books that aren’t too preachy or self-important. My sobriety is an important part of my life now, but I don’t want to be defined by it, and I’d like to read works by people who take a similar approach.

Hey Erin! You are doing great! 9 months is amazing! Going at alone is so…lonely! This community will certainly help with that, as well as answer some of the questions you posed. I go to AA meetings, but others are having success with other programs. If they don’t reply, I’ll find it and send it to you. Glad you found us!

Read This naked mind by Annie grace. I found it very interesting. I also got into counseling and a good church.

There it is Erin! I’ve been waiting for Jenn’s reply. I’m screen shotting this now so that I can pass it on in case she decides to take a day off! Time to get to work Erin.

That’s the road I took so I get how you feel. The more time you allow to pass, the clearer your decision becomes. It is hard alone but it would be much more difficult if you decided to use again.

“I prayed two times in the morning,
I prayed two times at night,
I prayed two times in the afternoon,
It makes me feel all right.
I prayed two times in time of peace,
And two in time of war.
I prayed two times before I prayed two times,
And then I prayed two times more.”

Have you ever looked into CBT? It’s good if you don’t want to go the spiritual route.

Working a program has definitely helped me so much. Have you explored online meetings? There are so many different ones available. There are also lots of good books out there. I’ve enjoyed the ones related to the science behind addiction, such as the naked mind and the alcohol experiment. Other things I’ve done that’s helped is seeing therapists and also a psychiatrist who started me on meds to help.

The opposite of addiction is connection. So if meetings aren’t your thing please find another way of getting plugged into a program of recovery. There really is nothing quite like interacting with ppl who just get it. They understand immediately what you couldn’t explain to a normie in 10 lifetimes. So use us!!
