I’m still struggling to name my higher power. Any suggestions from the agnostics on how to fill that God-shaped hole?
Maybe your best self? What you are striving for, to be?
Or maybe a loved one that is no longer with you, someone that you see as if there were guardian angels, they are it.
Someone told me something life changing for me last week. Write down 5 things you would choose god to be and then pray to that as your god/higher power.
So I have a friend who calls them
Mr. Rogers,
SAM- someone ain’t me
GUS- guy up stairs
But I’ve also called my dude, bro, sir, anything that I thought would make HP more relateable
Love these! Especially sir. I might use that. But yes anything you feel is bigger than you. Even if you used "God," it doesn't have to mean it is that one being.
Maybe a higher power needs no label.
You don't have to name it, just a power greater than yourself that is personal to you. For me personally, I don't even visualize mine or picture him in human form. It's just a force for me. It's just something I feel and I keep at that. I don't feel the need to complicate it any further.
Have you found any secular meetings in your area? There is a We Agnostics meeting in the San Diego area, I believe. I'm pretty sure it is in person, but there are also online meetings everyday that are secular. Worth checking out. I go to several secular meetings a week on top of the traditional meetings and both are very helpful, but I really value the secular ones. I have determined that my "higher power" is the group. The people in the room, the tangible souls that I know I can call on if I need help, the group that doesn't work in mysterious ways.
Group of drunks. G.o.d. That worked for me at first, now I’m more spiritual. But god doesn’t have to be “god”. It’s really just to have faith in something other then yourself
Also, check out this site, there is a lot of good info there. "About AA Agnostica | AA Agnostica" About AA Agnostica | AA Agnostica
Just start praying everyday even if you don’t know who you are praying too, make a gratitude list everyday, read from the big book or basic text everyday, talk to someone in recovery everyday, and help someone everyday and i promise your higher power will find you.
I’m the same way. It’s hard to let go and try to accept the higher power. Journal is a good idea
I think giving away your power to “something” is key, could be the sky, a guardian angel, anything to believe that we are not alone in our struggle. In early sobriety this is key, and really doesn’t matter “what” you believe your higher power is? In later sobriety, guess what? I found all along the power was in ME! Keep going and give your power away to whatever keeps you sober until you get strong!
You got this
My experience is very similar. It all started with a horrendous bottom that resulted in a new found willingness to be open to the idea of a HP. At first the power was my AA group. Little by little, I realized I had always had the power in me. I always knew right from wrong, I just was powerless over my wants and desires. My ego and self will were controlling the show. Everyday I have to be mindful of the battle that goes on inside my head. I make a choice to follow my conscious. I was born with a conscious. It’s a gift from my HP. It’s what connects me to the powers of the universe that I begin can’t (and don’t even try) to explain.
I have found the best higher power is not always a diety. I have seen the Group Of Drunks used by many. One friend had their baby as the higher power...I totally get that. I have an infant that definitely controls my life.
Hello Leslie, I am not a Bible thumper but I do believe in Jesus Christ. If you are on the fence try reading
Cold Case Christianity by J. Warner Wallace. You might find it quite compelling. Reach out anytime I will talk to anyone about sobriety and life if it helps
Good Orderly Direction
Great OutDoors
Group Of Drunks

Very well put Brett.
This is corny. You’re warned. But in one of my first meetings with my sponsor when we were navigating the religious hurdle, he looked at me and said “Surely it isn’t you, so if we can agree that there’s something else, let’s move on”.
So I called my hp Shirley “Surely”.
I warned you.
It can just be your support group GOD aka group of drunks
