I’m that guy that has never been an alcoholic. So that’s what I’ve been telling myself for decades. Never needed a drink, I just like it🤷♂️. I can put the drink down for 1-3 days, sometimes weeks. Never any withdrawals. Obviously not an alcoholic, right?
I don’t have any DUI’s, I don’t miss work, I don’t beat my wife or daughter. That’s what an alcoholic looks like, right?
I pay my bills, I work. Self employed successfully for over a decade as a matter of fact. I have no debt. Those all are signs of someone that has it together. Surely an alcoholic can’t do all that, right?
I guess I am an alcoholic. I am all of those things. But reality has slapped me hard. Turns out people that “Aren’t alcoholics” but drink every day are indeed, alcoholics.
Got the phone call from the doctors office yesterday. Fatty liver disease. Hopefully there is not more damage done than that. Time will tell. So today is the first day I will publicly say, Hello, my name is Greg, and I’m an alcoholic.
I don’t need sympathy or well wishes. I just needed to not lie to myself. This will be a new beginning for me, because I see the end of this road if I continue to live this way.

Have you seen the movie Flight? Great depiction of a seemingly functioning alcoholic. It so reminded me of me.
