I’m upset. I find myself drunk at 7:30 PM on a Friday night Eastern time. What would you do if you were in my shoes? Would you reset your time or would you say it’s a slip? I’ve been down this road so many times but yet I still follow the same path. Any insight would be highly appreciated.
It's a slip, start over day one
It's a slip but you must be honest with yourself and start back at day one
slips and relapses are a part of the process!
It's a day, yesterday was a day, tomorrow is a day. The day after was a day. Examine the fact that you lived a day. That's all. You're not changing anything that happened. What are you going to do tomorrow?
It’s okay to slip. Don’t let it discourage your journey. Coming here shows growth! You got this.
I’m very obsessive and the drinking helps me quiet my mind. Do you ever feel like drinking helps you almost gain control of your thoughts and feelings?
I’m also very obsessive. It’s doesn’t let us have control though, it just numbs the thoughts and feelings. Don’t let it fool you. Sobriety also comes with emotional sobriety and those obsessions will fade I promise
I appreciate the insight. My mind is calmed by the alcohol but then it feels like it’s on overdrive the following day. Do you experience the same effect the following day and how do you quiet the racing thoughts? Sorry to be a bother if I am.
The following days are the worst days imaginable. This is a plus to sobriety. We can control how we feel and our thoughts. Alcohol is a poison, and for someone like myself who already struggles with OCD and depression, it’s increased those negative feelings tremendously. I am on day 6 of being completely sober. And with it all finally out of my system, I am happy and productive and optimistic. I have a clear head and have energy to do things I’ve been wanting to do. Even in a short amount of time I have noticed a change. Please stick with it.. stick past the first week of withdrawals and irritability. Eat a lot of food and drink a lot of water. I promise it gets better. Message me anytime you would like. I’m new to this as well, but can provide a lot of insight.
Alcohol is so deceptive. You think it helps but it really doesn't. Reset to day one. I can't even count how many day ones I have. Just keep coming back
Yes, it is a vicious cycle! Alcohol is just a temporary fix to quiet the mind at the moment, but then you feel worse and need more alcohol to fix that… and so on. So we need to fine other ways to quiet the mind. Sometimes you just have to sit still with the uncomfortable feels. It’s hard for sure, but alcohol is not the answer. I wish I had one for you and me. Stay strong
Sorry I didn’t spellcheck… lol hope you get the message
Congratulations on day 6. I had 5 days the previous week and threw it away. I feel so good when I make it that long not drinking and I reward myself with a drink. I know it sounds crazy but that’s my thought process. I have horrible anxiety, ocd, and day after depression. Alcohol calms all that down for me but it rears it’s ugly head the following day. I feel like I’m stuck in a vicious cycle. I’m drinking tonight. I’ve already decided and I’m going to restart my journey on Monday. I know it’s not good but at least I’m being open and honest with someone. I have to hide my drinking from the rest of the world. Do you suffer from the anxiety and depression after drinking and if so how do you cope? I exercise but then I tend to overdue that. I need to find a happy medium.
Don’t take that drink! What is it going to do for you today? It will only make you feel worse tomorrow. The reward for not drinking is a better life, not another drink. Reward yourself with other things. The money you will save alone from not drinking will allow you to financially do as you please! Please try another outlet tonight. Give yourself plans that don’t involve alcohol, and then make yourself busy. Don’t let this win, the only way to stop the day afters are the day befores. You are strong and you can do this!
Go forward stronger by being armed with the knowledge of what triggered the slip. You have gotten some good advice from folks. You are stronger by being vulnerable and sharing
I found my self in the same boat last night after 4 days sober. That TGIF feeling and thinking I would relax. Then waking up with that hang over the reminder that its not worth it. Day one again but happy to have a day one and keep pushing on this journey for sobriety. One day at a time.
Does it work though? Drinking stopped working for me a long time ago.
Try again
I’m not sure I understand your question. If you are still just trying to string together a few days, I wouldn’t worry about the count. Decide to stay sober for the next 24 hours. Get up the next morning and decide to stay sober for the next 24 hours. Get up… Eventually those 24 hour chunks will add up. You can’t set your eyes on anything longer than that. I can’t anyway. When I fall asleep sober for the night, I reach my finish line. AA meetings help me get through the 24 hours (to my finish line).
If your life depended on it .what would you do.aa. Org for meetings.churches are having there own meetings.there way. Check on line.
