I messed up and threw away 6 days of sobriety

I messed up and threw away 6 days of sobriety. Got into it with my wife while on vacation and threw away 6 days of sobriety. I hate myself for it.

Today is a new day!

Hi Shay!
Don’t be so hard on yourself. We all go through relapse and moments of giving in. If staying sober was easy, than anyone would do it. Get back on the horse and start again. What matters is that you continue to try. You got this!! I believe in you!

It’s six days. Get sober now. Learn from it. Do things differently (do more). A year from now the six days won’t mean $hit. Almost all of us slip up. The ones that make it to long term, learn from it and change what they are doing. That usually means doing more of something. Make your recovery your priority.

One day at a time man. We all have today. Beating yourself up won’t help. Just take the day and reflect on what happened. How could you have changed the situation? Reach out before taking that drink, it’s hard to ask for help, but the AA community is always there for you.

You didn’t “throw away six days” you still have those days. Gather lessons from the slip and get back on the road. The only time we lose days is when we don’t get back up.

Its ok! You are trying, you are moving in the right direction! Just pick yourself back up and stay sober for the next 24 hours. Then another 24.....Life is stressful. You will have to find other ways to handle stress than drinking. Exercise, run, walk outside, take a shower, make a phone call to a fellow alcoholic in recovery, go to a meeting, online or in person......

Best of luck with your choices, I'm rooting for you to understand the power you have over your choices. Your wife, (or boss or coworker or family or neighbor) cannot make you do anything unless you let them. Great help for me was/is listening to Covey's 7 habit audiobook on my commute. Don't empower anyone to take your sobriety choice from you. You got this!
