I told my wife about my addiction and it didn’t

I told my wife about my addiction and it didn’t go well.
I was hoping to be open with my family for support but now I don’t know if I should
Any advice on opening up to family,
Without having them worry

How did it not go so well? Is your wife disappointed that you are using or drinking did she not know?

Look at it from her point of view… telling someone you have a problem is a pretty big bomb to drop. My wife was furious, sad, confused when I told her. She had gotten used to living with me as a drunk, and now i flipped the script. She wasn’t sure what to expect. A lot of it was she thought I was pulling a con on her. She was waiting for me to flip it again. I had manipulated her for so long, she only knew that version of me. It took time, lots of time. And open communication. Patients. If she is anything like my wife was, it’s almost like Stockholm syndrome. You can not demand support, and I am sorry to say, but there is a chance it won’t work out. Getting sober is a lifestyle change. All you can do to earn trust back is show them. Good luck man. Get involved in a program. The community is vital. Keep reaching out.

Thank you for sharing your story with me, I can relate to a lot that you said. And I am gonna keep reaching out and opening up

Usually the spouse is aligned with one quitting an addiction unless they themselves are an addict or an enabler. So how did honesty about an addiction not go well? Are you seeking her support in recovery or did you just enlighten her to an active addiction?

She always knew I was a heavy drinker, but she didn’t know I was using drugs. I’ve been hiding it for years and the past year has gotten way out of hand that I’ve been coping with heavy drug use. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I think she was ashamed and wants nothing to do with me right now. I don’t blame her

Right on Edward …. Yeah I guess we can’t blame her BUT it’s important you told her the truth and hopefully she eventually appreciates that. You need help and it’s time to go get it :pray:t3:
