I’ve been having a rough go of it the last

I’ve been having a rough go of it the last couple of days and i’m finding it harder and harder to cope. I recently found out that my dad has starting drinking heavily again and that he’s hiding it from everyone. I know I need to tell my mother, but this whole incident has been such a strong trigger I can barely manage my own sobriety let alone be responsible for his. I know that turkey day leads him to drink even more, and I’ve had to turn down family dinner all together because of it. I’m coming up on two months sober and it’s the longest I’ve ever gone without a drink. It’s getting harder and harder each day.

Hang in there. I'm only 5 days in myself. Two months is awesome and a great milestone. The hangovers and the super bad anxiety the next day isn't worth it, also it's not a guarantee that we can just stop again whenever we want. I will say a prayer for you right now. There are online meetings and also I just YouTubed being lonely in sobriety. There are good videos on there. We just have to change out mindset even if it's for 5 minutes. All the best to you. God Bless you.

Thank you very much. I’m going to try an online meeting today, and I’ll definitely look into those videos. I’ve never though to look on YouTube for sobriety resources. Thank you for your prayers, they mean a lot!

Hi Juniper! First of all sorry that the pressure of your father's drinking is coming into your recovery. That's such a sad situation and the emotions that it stirs up must really hurt. Recognizing it as a trigger for you is something you can build on in your recovery and your life. You clearly are concerned and that's important for you. At the same time, you're also able to recognize that you need distance from your father's drinking, and here's the really important part, you took action. Way to go! It is simply not up to you, especially in early sobriety, to take on "being responsible for his." Sorry if this is difficult to hear, but your sobriety is the priority. You're doing the right thing. Hang in there and keep posting on here, especially if things keep getting harder for you. Don't hesitate to reach out.

Anytime. Right there with you.

I really needed to hear all of this. I’m still fighting the feeling that I need to rescue him, but you’re absolutely right. I need to focus on myself and my own recovery right now. This is the longest I’ve been sober, and I don’t want to take that risk. Thank you for this encouragement, it’s nice to know that I’m still heading in the right direction.
