I’ve been sober for 4 days, 5 if I make it through my first Saturday. I’m 32 years old and have been an alcoholic since I was 16. Not a wake up have to have a beer, not an everyday drinker, but I had become that everyday drinking in the last few years. I am a huge binge drinker, weekend partier. I know that alcohol has complete control over my life. The past 4 days have been a breeze, I’ve been listening to podcasts, reading posts from others, and writing everyday. I have been putting in effort to get sober. My longest bout of sobriety in the last 16 years was 59 days which came after getting arrested for drinking and driving. But today is much different than the last 4 days. I feel accomplished and think wow look I don’t have to drink. I can go days without drinking, maybe this time I’ve learned my lesson, and can control my drinking. I was told once by a trusted friend with 20+ years of sobriety, that’s the addiction, it tricks you into thinking you don’t have a problem, you can control it. I understand that I have to always remember that I am powerless against alcohol. I have proven to myself for the last 16 years that in no way can I control my drinking. I guess why I’m deciding to post this here today is because I need support from others like me. Also maybe needing some words of encouragement, maybe need to hear someone else’s story who was in my shoes and got past this day.
Hi Barbie! Congratulations on four days, you can do this fifth day! And if you don’t, you can always start over again. There is no shame in learning how to be sober, it is a process. I am 31, and got sober when I was 28 because like you, I was a binge drinker. I started binge drinking when I was 13, and had little bouts of sobriety here and there, but basically i drank heavily for 16 years. I didn’t drink everyday, but when I did drink it was out of control. In the end I knew that if I didn’t stop, the alcohol was going to kill me. Sobriety was the best thing I ever did for myself, I have never once regretted it. At times it can be a struggle, but once you have practiced it for a long while it becomes easier. The no becomes automatic and the cravings mostly go away, or at least that has been my experience. You got this girl!
I have almost the exact story. I’ve been drinking since 16. I am jumping back into sobriety after a drunk driving incident. I am on day 4 and feeling amazing positivity. I am coming to the realization that I am also powerless. Stay positive and we can do this!
Thank you two for the support! Definitely feels like it helped!
I was 26 when I got sober.I drink on
weekends to.then it caught up with me.and got sober.one day at a time. 34 years.
Drinking is good in the beginning.then the older we get .it gets worse .it just keeps growing .we start with 1 and ends with how many.then the old we get we have health issues.because we are drinking around the clock.
