I’ve tried this on my own for years and it

I’ve tried this on my own for years and it hasn’t worked. I’ve read all the books…some twice. I want to try AA but have a lot of anxiety going to my first meeting. There’s one by my house but I’m so scared to go. Any advice?

I was scared beyond belief my first time through the door. I was welcomed with open arms and they loved me until I could live myself. I’ve never picked up since. I went to 90 meetings in 90 days and told myself I would not form any option on AA until then. I was still sober at 90 days so I got a sponcor and worked the steps, it changed me somehow. I love my sobriety and life now. It there for you to if you take it like a life ring to a drowning person.

My experience was to take that leap. Step through that fear. I raised my hand and said my first name when they asked if anyone was new. Please go walk through that door to the meeting. My life today is full of opportunities and “the promises”. The program works IF we work it. Best wishes!

I encourage you to go, you are worth it. I’m on my way to a meeting now and can’t wait to see my sober family

I have gone to many meetings where I sit in the back and don’t say a word the whole time!

Find someone to go to the meeting with you. If you know anyone who goes to AA meetings you can ask them, otherwise a ‘normie’ family member or friend who supports you. If it is the latter, make sure that the meeting is “open” (not “closed” - it will say on an AA schedule online), and that they do not share in the meeting. Sometimes this person will be called ‘A person of support’.

Thats the good things about the meetings, you find out your not by yourself. You share stories, or listen, it helps to know how many people are going through this. Telling people what you’ve done, how you feel without judgement and having some understanding of what it takes to make it was a strong support for me. I wasn’t alone, Im not the only one, they want me to succeed. Strangers! Want me to succeed, because its hard and we understand what its like. You don’t get the old “well just slow down” comments. If I could slow down I wouldn’t need help lol right? It still amazes me how people can have just one drink…anyways try it, let us know how it goes.

There’s a story about Johnny and the dragon. After he touches it it starts to shrink:blush::ok_hand:

Or you can go all in, read the book and do the steps. We have a 100 percent guarantee that if you do the work and it doesn’t work, we will refund all your misery :man_shrugging:

Go and check it out. Sometimes you have to shop around for different groups that suit you. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t like the first one you try. Some people want smaller groups because of the anxiety.

I was so scared to go too. I put it off for so long but wish I would have done it sooner. Is there anyone you can reach out to to go with you? And the meetings are all different- try to check out a couple different ones. Good luck! If I can do it, so can you!
