I was sexually assaulted by someone who was one of my best friends. Since then, every time I drink, I spiral. Drinking gives me the dopamine rush to feel better and allows me to open up and talk about my emotions surrounding the incident.
Until the next day when I’m more depressed and anxious. I know this isn’t a healthy way to cope. I’m in therapy but it’s a slow process. Confusing and life changing few months..
I recently got on naltrexone and signed up for therapy. I was told they work good together. Naltrexone blocks the dopamine you get from alcohol so if you have a drink while on it you won’t want to keep drinking. You can drink through it but it’s supposed to help with cravings
Thank you so much!! I wasn’t aware of that!!
Naltrexone was super helpful for me to stop drinking. It can take a few months of drinking on it to finally rewire your brain, but once your brain no longer associates drinking with dopamine your cravings should disappear.
The book 'The Cure for Alcoholism: The Medically Proven Way to Eliminate Alcohol Addiction' was also really helpful in understanding the science behind using naltrexone to treat addiction, and seeing the results from many of the clinical trials where naltrexone has been used.
