Just be honest

I often run into this and what works best for me is simply saying “I don’t have a healthy relationship with alcohol and I want to change that”. You can always elaborate if they pry, but I’ve found explaining it as a matter of health causes less stigma.

I have a sick sense of humor, so when I’m talking about my substance abuse problems with someone I’m close with I usually go with “I’ve been the life of the party…except the party ended a while ago and no one is left but me.”

For me, I said “ I have a problem. I am gonna fix it, but I need some patience while I figure it out”
Right now just focus on healing. Be kind to yourself. You are taking some hard steps. The shame and guilt will subside a bit each day… there is no way to know when. The best thing you can do is just show your family you are changing for the better. Fixing relationships comes later… that’s why it is step 9 not 2. Be honest with any questions and with yourself. Good luck!

For me it is helpful to let people know before an event or get-together that I won’t be drinking. It makes it easier to stick to it and hopefully get support.

Lol wow that was a good one but yes I totally agree with you

Thanks everyone..its nice to feel the support!

Get to some AA meetings and see if you identify with what is being said. Then you can talk to your family about what you did or didn’t learn.
Welcome btw!
