i went to a meeting. they wouldn’t let me talk about drug addiction only alcoholism when i don’t drink, was super religious. and it was four men and me. felt very uncomfortable. i tried. just to get my mind on something else.
AA meetings are strictly for alcoholics. Try an NA meeting, they accept all addictions.
What Elizabeth said…. Do they have NA’s around you? AA meetings are mixed some will be ok with drug talk others not so much …. To me it’s all the same. You should be able to talk about drugs or booze or both
The unfortunate truth is some AA meetings are absolute trash. The AA meetings I frequent aren't like that, they don't care what the DOC was as long as you're sharing some topic based solution. I actually prefer CA meetings to AA, but that's just my personal preference. Keep going to meetings and trying to find one you like. Even if the meeting ends up sucking at least that's one hour you weren't high and that's the purpose. You'll get there!
I never had that issue. Could openly talk about drinking and drugging
This is only half true in my experience. Some AA meetings are "strict" and some are not. I find that the secular AA meetings are not strict and are more sobriety/staying clean focused and zero proselytizing for the lord. Way more welcoming. NA is just too much goddãmn hugging for me.
NA’s better in my opinion. In the meetings I go to you can identify as an addict or alcoholic, or cross addicted. I’ve been to many AA meetings before and got an off vibe. On a couple occasions you would see some young person there for their first meeting (which I know is terrifying to most, at least it was for me!) The young man stands up in front of the room and says he’s an addict at his first meeting. Then some rude old guy shouts from the back in a snarky tone “are you an alcoholic or not?!?” For all I know that kid never came back. There’s a better way to explain the program to a new comer then to embarrass them at their first time trying AA. I didn’t think much of the whole situation. And I’ve seen this more than once. I went to NA and felt so much more comfortable. In my opinion recovery is recovery. To each their own though.
That sux! I was once that young kid. I haven’t witnessed that myself, but I know 99% of the people who attend the meetings I go to would make sure to speak with the newcomer and welcome them
Yeah it was something I didn’t expect to see. I’m not putting AA down though, it’s a great program if you work it. Was just saying maybe try out a different meeting, because yes, 99% of people I’ve met through recovery are amazing
that’s exactly how it felt
That’s too bad. It’s important to find the right meeting, one where you feel comfortable at. I understand if there might not be many around your area though. Keep trying and best wishes. Something I still have trouble grasping is that the opposite of addiction is connection. I still work on that everyday
I’m sorry Luna. There’s things I love about AA, and there are things I dislike about AA. I’m sorry you got the bad. That’s probably why only 4 show up to that meeting.
Celebrate Recovery is another one for finding support, no matter what your addictions have been. Some people go who have no drug or alcohol dependency in their past. They go for support in just feeling better.
Bad feelings are the worst thing to be addicted to, and even just that, we all need a place to go to feel better.
Sounds like Aa. They’ve got so many more. Friend me, let’s talk
In the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous, they talk about drugs. The meetings that I attend also talk about drugs. At the end of the day, it’s about helping the next sick and suffering individual. You’ll find meetings that will be what you are looking for. Don’t give up and ask around for some meetings to try out.
