I woke up with a strong urge to drink this

I woke up with a strong urge to drink this morning. 12 days in and I’m pretty miserable. I keep hearing people talk about being on a pink cloud and that’s never been my experience. I have been diagnosed with bipolar depression, an anxiety disorder and PTSD so I know that I have to work harder to be happy than others. Managing my recovery and mental health issues has been overwhelming and I’m not sure how to deal with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This isn’t probably what you want to hear, because I know it wasn’t what I wanted to hear..but AA meetings. Everyone is different, but they’ve helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Just need to find one that feels fitting to you. Anyhow, if not AA, and then finding a fellow alcoholic that’s in recovery and open to be your accountability partner.

I am also bipolar. After I detoxed and attended meetings I went and got a full physical, and told my doctor EVERYTHING! All the bull I had been covering, hiding and lying to him about. The next few months we worked out both a med regiment and therapy, along with AA meetings. Now with the correct meds, a clear understanding of what my alcoholism did to both myself and my family, and working the steps I can say I have control back in my life. It isn’t easy… but it can be done.

Totally vibe with this. I went through this same stretch the first time around. The one thing I didn’t know is that it is 100% normal to feel a little miserable and strange in the beginning as your body is detoxing from YEARS of alcohol. But, know that it is absolutely temporary. Look at the struggle as your body and mind mending itself and finally dealing with the issues we often bury with alcohol. AA meetings are great. But, so is establishing a routine and building a great support network. Sending you all the positive thoughts my friend!

Thank you! I’ve been going to AA meetings and they’ve been super helpful. Just got a sponsor today. She’s super cool. So grateful for AA. When I go a day without going to a meeting I feel yucky. It definitely helps center me and puts me in the right frame of mind.

Thank you! Your story is inspiring. I’ve been going to AA meetings and started taking new medications which I hope will be helpful. Sounds like I’m on the right track. I appreciate you sharing your story.

Thank you! That’s great advice. I’m not doing anything you mentioned but I plan on starting. I’ve let my health go since I started drinking excessively. My last labs showed that I have low vitamin D levels and high cholesterol. I’ve never had negative blood work results in my life. Time to get back on track.

Thank you! I appreciate you sharing your story with me. Everything you said is so true. It’s good to know that these feelings are temporary. I’ve been going to AA meetings and just started working with a sponsor today. I’m working on building a support network outside of my family. I also need to work on establishing a routine. This is nonexistent in my life at this time. You brought up a lot of good points. Thank you for the advice!
