Is it necessary to find a new group of friends who don’t drink after going sober?
Do you mean is it necessary to find friends who don't drink alcohol? If so, yes.
Yes, that’s what I meant.
Gotcha. You deserve those kind of friendships. Don't settle.
Let me ask you a question in response. If you get cured of leprosy, would you want to hang our with people who still have it? Addiction is a disease that is treatable, but being around people who aren't treating it makes treatment near impossible. If your sobriety is t a priority to them then relapse is so much easier. You need friends who have the same goals as you. I am reminded of a Bible verse; "how can two walk together unless they are in agreement?" That basically means you can't walk down the road with someone unless you agree on the direction.
I was wondering this too and actually one of the reasons I got on this app. Plenty of my friends I never see unless we’re partying
When recovery starts to make sense to you, then your associates can be anyone because you're not going to jeopardize your recovery for nothing. That usually comes after alot of pain and years. Unless you can discern wisdom without having to fall to get it, then you can get this thing early. Very few take this path...
Yes .and go to any meetings.you will full better about your self.
I did not have to disband all my friends, but I am also a lucky man in that they all support my sobriety. I make sure I have an escape route and if I just ghost them, they get it. I have turned down invitations to hang out when I was having a rough patch, and again they understood. I guess just look at the character of the people you associate with and decide if it is a good idea to be around them.
At first yes, you need to give yourself time to grow and learn about yourself without any of the temptation. It seems like it sucks at first, but believe me, you will get to the point where that style of living or having a drink at all, is unattractive. Therefore your view on the type of people you want will change, and you will aquire a different group anyway. Really, it's about giving yourself a chance to find you.
Short answer, Yes. Long answer, When they find out you’re serious about being sober and don’t want to go out to places where there is alcohol involved, you’ll quickly find most of the people you thought were friends will drop you anyway if you don’t drop them. If you have friends that are genuinely really close for actual non-drinking buddy reasons that are VERY SUPPORTIVE of your decision to get sober, make them online only friends and put up very clear boundaries that if they ever so much as suggest you go to a bar with them, they won’t be hearing from you for a long time. If they can’t agree to that, then they’re probably not very good friends and just drinking buddies after all. Getting sober has a way of showing you who your true friends are one way or another
