Is it possible to do the twelve steps without doing aa? I’m confused on the two of them… I would like to do the twelve steps though!
It is possible, but i find it difficult. Aa can help find a sponsor who can in turn help with the steps.
I don’t know how much community you have left or what your experience is with spirituality, but if you don’t have much healthy/ sober community left then a recovery group can be useful as a sort of new family. They may help you relearn to care for yourself and others, and provide a spiritual home / keep out ones who might use/ abuse/ take advantage of your relative isolation. They can be a stabilizing presence/ higher power if you need or want that. Some of the stuff people write about in the 4th step can cause emotional turmoil and pain that could trigger a relapse. So they’re presence may help you while you get right with your past, look at your present, and seek to make a future. It’s also kind of cultish. Go it alone or do what they do and belong.
I didn’t do the 12 steps or meetings. Probably not the wisest decision, but for an (now 100% sure) extreme introvert/former sneak drinker, I felt if I couldn’t get control of it when I’m alone, I would never be able to stop. Right or wrong? TBD. I’m less than a month away from 2 years of sobriety and an occasional NA beer with a variety of creative outlets to stimulate the new brain, it has been working so far. Whatever works for you. Im confident I’m still learning to use this new brain and it’s pretty amazing. Keep it up! It’s worth every minute.
The twelve steps were created by the founders of AA so essentially doing the steps is doing AA.
They go hand & hand
AA is so valuable even if you don’t work the steps right away. For me it’s the fellowship with others that helps most. Being in those rooms forces an honesty that i think is important for recovery. I REALLY did not want to go to meetings and didn’t for the first 6 months of my sobriety, I was sober but miserable. AA helped that a lot. Good luck.
Celebrate Recovery is an amazing free group you can join “forever family” is their moto. Their step study’s is amazing! Anyone and everyone will benefit from stopping into one of their groups! What are the 2 that you are hung up on!
I highly recommend the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. Whether it be a discussion or a speaker meeting you really do get a lot out of what people have done and currently do to stay sober. I'm not sure why anybody would not want to go.
Of course its possible. You just need to be honest with yourself and hold yourself accountable.
Awesome, I’ll check that out- thank you!
I think I phrased the last part of my question weird lol I just meant the two things: AA and 12 steps.
I have been looking into rational recovery it is an alternative to AA and it has been extremely helpful for me. No disrespect to AA I know that it has worked for several people, I found that I resonate more with the teachings from the rational recovery group.
