Is today the day I finally stop killing myself with alcohol? My husband is contemplating leaving me because of my addiction and behavior. Can't I just be normal?

Hi Mitch, the first step in seeking recovery is accepting that you aren’t normal when it comes to drinking, it can be frustrating and make you try to control your drinking in different ways, but once you overcome that hurdle and understand that you truly cannot control your drinking and that alcohol is toxic for you you can move forward in recovery. I can tell you from personal experience (over three years of sobriety) that you can still have a full and fulfilling life. I still do the things I want and go the places I choose. My life is not lacking anything. And I get to remember and be in control at each event I attend, every dinner with friends or family, and every holiday. You can do this!

Today is the only day you have. Active addiction is selfish by nature, instead of being selfish maybe do something for him. Clean the house, cook his favorite meal, do the dishes. This is what “normal people” do for their significant others. The laundry. Contribute instead of getting sloppy and putting it on him.
