Day 62

“We missed the reality in the beauty of the forest because we were diverted by the ugliness of some of its trees.“ AA page 50

When I was using, my life was defined by sometimes daily tragedies. Even if circumstances occasionally seem to get better, they inevitably returned to the worst. I tried to forget the nightmare of these terrifying experiences, but I lived in fear of the next calamity, which I was certain was just around the corner.

Upon entering recovery, I often remained a victim of the ceaseless obsession – Unable to shake the idea that sooner or later, the other shoe would drop.

By focusing my energy on the fears of tomorrow, I continue to rob myself of the current day’s true beauty. Because the incessant dread that “it will ultimately fall apart“ was all I’d ever known, I failed to see many of the countless gifts which my Higher Power had granted me through the grace and gift of sobriety.

Fortunately, Steps Four through Seven enabled me to recognize the counterproductive nature of these fears. With God’s help, I began believing the future holds bright opportunity and promise. I was released from the fear-based beliefs which kept me stagnant.

I will not allow trepidation about tomorrow to divert me from life‘s magnificence today. As a symbol of my gratitude, I will call or contact those people who have helped me find recovery and thank them for being a part of my life. By putting gratitude into action, I not only pay tribute to my sobriety and those who went before me, but I am reminded to stay firmly rooted in the reality of the present moment.
