Job/Notice/Venting

So, recently, I went on a three day drinking spree, and after a day and a half of being sober, I texted my boss and put in my two weeks notice for a job that I really love. I made this decision because I feel like honestly, I know when I pass these two liquor stores on the way home; (I normally went every single night to buy a bottle everyday after work) that I’ll eventually make this stop again. I really want to change and I feel like I need to steer clear of anything alcohol related at the moment and put myself in a new environment entirely. And honestly too, my dad works where I do too; and he got me the job so I’m making him look pretty bad calling in pretending I’m sick just because I’m drunk as heck. I’m a great worker but when I drink; obviously I can never make it to work and things go around because I always make those stupid drunk calls even to my co workers. Which sucks so I feel like I need to erase all that and leave it behind. Oh and tomorrow will be my first day back since my call in drinking spree so I’m pretty embarrassed to even show up to work tomorrow.
Has anybody completely felt that they really need a new change of environment in order to really feel like you have a new start? Stay away from what you know type of thing?

Many Thanks!

Sounds like a great opportunity to get into a rehab after the two weeks are up if you can make it that long. Getting plugged into a recovery program when you know you have a problem works. Learning the tools in rehab a great start. Bet if you went this route they’d welcome you back. Getting sober is a great life. Nothing cooler.

My brother actually taken me to my first AA meeting not too long ago as he is an alcoholic and I loved it! I didn’t feel alone and I felt like I could be open and myself because nobody was embarrassed to talk about their short comings with alcohol. I’m definitely wanting to go again.

Well, you can zoom also. Around the clock they are. Google them. Glad you got something out of it. Fellowshipping with others struggling is lifeline to a new you.

How would you find a zoom meeting

I had the same situation with my job in Sacramento! I finally got a new work environment and it’s been incredible.

Thanks! I really needed to hear this!

I’m so glad to hear this, Nate! It really gives me some inspiration to hear that and confidence into taking this new step!

I started drinking heavily while working graveyards at Amazon and, like you, felt like I needed to quit to get away from that environment to be able to quit drinking. I only gave about 6 hrs notice before quitting.

For me I was still drinking in secret and wasn't active in any treatment (besides really wanting to stop) when I quit, and so it never really worked for me. Instead it just gave me more free time to drink and little reason not to, and so my drinking increased instead.

If you do end up quitting I'd make sure to find ways to keep yourself busy throughout the day and talk to your doctor or someone about treatment options. I'd also have goals (besides getting sober) that you're working towards that can keep you motivated and keep your mind off of drinking.

If you're in the US, it might also be worth looking into FMLA leave which can give you several weeks (Google says up to 12) of guaranteed unpaid time off to get treatment without losing your job, however you'd need a note from your doctor and it might not be applicable since you've already given 2 weeks notice. But something to look into if you're just looking for a few weeks to focus exclusively on getting sober, and not someplace new that you can start fresh.

Wow, I totally understand your frustration, I hope and pray you find sobriety. I too relapsed and just got out of a 7 day detox and I plan on going to IOP. I would get to some meetings, IOP, or rehab. The worse thing is to be isolated at home with a lot of time on your hands. I pray the very best for you.

I can relate. I was at a job where I loved a lot of the parts of the job, but my boss was toxic and overstepped boundaries and dismissed anything that I brought to the table. Those are big triggers for me due to past family issues. After a weekend of drinking and being to hungover to work on Monday I sent an email letting them know I was taking a leave of absence to work in mental health. I did an IOP program which was great and gave notice as completed the program.

However, once the program was done and I had a new job, I also had more time on my hands and started drinking again. I have done some smart recovery groups and will continue to do so. Good for you for changing your environment.

oh yeahhh girl. I work in Denver and drive around Denver metro all day… I would stay up for three days partying and call out of work for the next five… It was awful. It happens way too much

I relocated and reemployed lots of times. Then someone told me
“No matter where you go, there you are”
I liked to blame everything and everyone other than me. Job, boss, girlfriend, town. Nothing changed until I changed.

Seems to me from reading your post that you have a good job that you love. Only problem is your drinking. If you removed the alcohol from the equation you wouldn’t need to quit. Just my observation.

What’s a smart recovery group? I never heard of that is it going to AA or NA?

This has aa meetings both virtual and in person. There are also apps like pink cloud and meeting guide that can tell you all the meetings and passwords.
