July 4th jitters

Last fourth was tough for me. It is one of the big drinking holidays and in my family that means a horse trough full of beers. How do you handle gathering where drinkings isn't only the norm, but expected?

I have a cooler of ice tea, ginger ale and sparkling water. Keep it in a can coozie and no one will be the wiser. When it gets to a point where you need to walk… do so. Have your sponsor or someone you can call if you need to and use the phone if you have to. Just make sure you keep your sobriety top of mind man.

I know that feeling . It’s uncomfortable and you feel like the elephant in the room . Just leave yourself a way out of the situation in case you need to go.

That's rough. I wish I had the/an answer. I'm not near my family so I don't struggle with this. But I agree with Tim and Luke.

Remember you always have the choice to just not go. Something I’m still working on myself because I have extreme fomo lol. You just have to ask yourself if you will feel emotionally safe at this event and if the answer is no then skip it. People don’t care

What’s been working for me is coming up with a script for when someone asks if I want a drink or why’d I stopped drinking. Funny thing is I fell back on my military POW training. Have the core statement and come back to it. “No thanks, but I’ll take a ginger ale if you got one”, “I stopped because my health was really suffering, and now I feel Great”

Don’t go.! If you want to stay sober.stay home.meetings :dromedary_camel:
