How has working the steps or a form of recovery helped you in finding a new way of life? Do you feel as if life gets easier as you do the work? Do you see the changes in yourself? These are questions I’ve asked myself over the years, as well as why do I keep going to meetings or having a sponsor now that I have years of recovery under my belt?
I came to the realization that without all of this combined, it’s really easy to go back to my old ways of thinking and possibly relapse in moments of weakness. Today I understand that recovery is not something I graduate from, it is something I live. The steps, the meetings, the fellowship, and my sponsor all help keep me grounded and remind me of where I came from and who I never want to be again.
As I continue to do the work, I do see changes in myself. Life does get easier, not because problems disappear, but because my perspective has changed. I have learned to lean on a higher power, to trust in something greater than myself, and to let go of the need to control everything around me. That alone has brought a sense of peace I never knew before.
I have also found gratitude in the small things, understanding in situations I once judged, and respect for the journey not only of my own, but of others walking this path. Recovery has taught me to slow down, to listen, and to be present. It has shown me that growth is a daily process and that I am exactly where I am meant to be as long as I stay willing.
Today I keep coming back not because I have to, but because I get to. I stay connected because I know what is at stake, and I respect the life I have been given today. With the help of my higher power and the program, I am learning how to live a new way of life one day at a time.
