Wanted to share something that’s working really well for me. Some might consider it a “white lie” - so this is not for everybody, but I’ve found it effective.
I’ve heard a lot of folks stress over situations (like a company happy hour for example) where they may be faced with two bad options: 1) drink alcohol, or 2) feel obligated to explain why they aren’t.
In that situation, my favorite line is “I might get something later.” It’s technically correct - as in yes, I MIGHT get SOMETHING later, but it’s in no way a commitment to imbibe.
Thus far, it’s been 100% effective at shutting people up on the topic. Even pushy people. Basically, it redirects the convo without drawing attention to sobriety as a subject that people feel the need to dig into.
By contrast, when I’ve said, “I don’t drink”, it almost always results in follow on conversation about why, which is particularly not fun when others are buzzed.
