Living alone while in the grip of my addiction was a bad thing in that I had no one to see, no one to make me feel ashamed of when I would wake up on my days off and start doing shots of liquor right away.
After leaving rehab, where I was only alone while sleeping, I was worried about this. However, it also made me fully in control of not having any substances in my home, so there was no temptation. I did have someone come by my place while I was gone to clear out any alcoholic drinks.
I've been out of rehab for almost three months now, and it does get lonely here at home. I got lucky a few days ago, and was able to get a puppy, and he is keeping me on my toes. He's only had two peepee accidents since being here, and I don't feel as silly talking to him as I did talking to myself.
I've never been a spiritual person, and all of the spirituality in the different programs is lost on me. I find a very large AA gathering once a week, and listening to the guest speakers to be helpful. My twice-a-week group therapy sessions help as well.
The puppy helps for the time in between meetings, so I'm not alone at home. It's company, responsibility, accountability, and love, all in one package.
What new responsibilities or hobbies have you found that distract you, or help reinforce your sobriety?
