For myself I have found that turning to philosophy has helped me tremendously. Both Within my recovery and everyday life. I use it as an add on for A.A. it helps me get a better grasp of the program. I am not spiritual or religious in a regular way. That's why I turned to philosophy.
Great conversation starter. Philosophy as a framework for recovery makes total sense, especially if the spiritual side of AA doesnβt click for you. Stoicism? Existentialism? What are you reading thatβs helping?
For me, I mix a few things, some AA / NA principles work, podcasts, books. and honestly just a lot of trial and error. Curious what others here use too. Anyone else supplement AA (or skip it entirely)?
Ancient Greek Stoicism not to be confused with the modern stoicism. There's some unsavory groups that twist its teaching.
I ready the daily stoic every morning and reflect. As well as if Iam having a hard time I read the Toa of Seneca. Meditation by Marcus Aurelius. Especially his teaching on being able to find beauty in the every thing, by uaing the right perspective. For example within the horrors of the coliseum. The blood and gore the Lion is still a beautiful creature. The softness of the main the pride in which it present itself.
The dictohamy of control is basically explains the serenity prayer. With the universal whole and everything being interwoven together and that each being has a peace of cosmic being/ higher power/ divinity or what ever you want to call it inside of them, has helped me get around the spiritual or religious side of a.a. By using the 4 pillars of virtue( courage, wisdom, justice and temperance) to live my daily life.
One of the biggest for me was living in the now not the past. I understand that a.a teaches you must make amends for past mistakes. But the past is gone. Never to be seen again and tomorrow is never here All we have is today. All you can do to truly make past mistakes right is to live better now. Similar to the living amends part of the program. Some of us drank and used because of the past and personnely I don't want to go back there.
Using stoicicm in my recovery and daily life is something Iam really passionate about. When I go to my meeting I hear so many people share struggles that stoicicm could honestly help with.
