Go to a meeting and are you sober or just not drinking??
Thank you so much Taylor!
Hi Wyatt, I'm in recovery and going to meetings.
Can’t be done without accountability and in my opinion, AA offers that
You're very welcome!
I wouldn't say AA "offers" accountability. It provides a standardized outline for staying sober, and also the fellowship of others who share your experience. I find the latter to be the most helpful, having sober friends has made all the difference to me. The 12 steps etc, good suggestions to help detangle and unfück your life, but not 100% necessary. The fellowship is absolutely necessary, to me, though. Most of us are already dealing with the accountability aspect of being drunken idiots when we get here. AA helps to take the sting out of that account. Just my opinion of course. "As Taylor Sees It".
I give my sponsor a lot of credit for helping me to finally get what it's all about this time around...I never had one the 1st almost 40 yrs of trying. I do know now that I didn't want to be quite that accountable.
Gricel,
In my opinion (I’m only talking from my point of view) find someone that you are comfortable with, that has experience and knows the process, this is a very intimate journey that your about to take. What I think is you do need to find someone that will push you and will get you to do the steps rigorously, but you need to be able to trust this person with your life (because that’s what we are talking about here). My sponsor is an asshole but I trust him with everything, he know things about me that my best friend and family doesn’t. That’s my two cents. Talked to people in your local meetings and ask them to guide you to someone.
How are you working the steps without a sponsor??
I worked the first 3 with my counselor when I was in treatment.
Appreciate the insight!
Thanks Joshua! Super helpful advice and you're right that's why I'm taking this process very seriously.
I've been holding myself accountable and also doing a program.
I love your name and I encourage you to go to as many meetings as you can the first three months and they will add up and support a quicker fuller foundation plus you’ll meet many supportive ppl. I wish I could be there too!
Thank you Tony! Right now I'm in group 4 days a week, but looking forward to meeting more friends in recovery.
A sponsor with some good sobriety is definitely suggested. I would also suggest you go to women’s AA meetings and ask someone there.
It definitely helps to have a sponsor.
Hi TW! yes, I have in fact worked the first steps because I checked myself into treatment and worked with my counselor and other professionals on the first 3 (not by myself). This is a continuation of what I've already started. Also, yes, I have read the big book regarding my alcohol problem and how to solve it.
Thanks Matt! Going to an in person meeting this weekend. Currently attending online meetings but I find it a bit challenging to connect on a deeper level, which is why it's taking me some time to find a sponsor.
