This is funny, but I don't totally agree.
I don't have a belief in any sort of god or spiritual stuff. I find it silly to ask something else to rid me of my character defaults etc. Nobody can do that but me. I think of my higher power as me on my best day (or better day). A day when I don't give anyone the finger in traffic, a day when I make amends immediately. When I pause before doing something dumb. A day staying sober. A day with all of those things is the best version of me. A higher version of me. Nothing is gonna happen without putting in work. Nothing. "Give it to god"? Please. People have been praying their whole lives and still they are in the gutter. Good, innocent people. Children even. God/the universe etc is too complicated(in my opinion), too much mental gymnastics to even try. Work makes sense, faith does not.
Of course the group is also something i refer to for help, but they still aren't going to remove my "shortcomings". And, I'm a part of that group too, so it makes sense to me that the best version of me is a feasible higher power. It's certainly much less elusive than a God who diddles in my life when he feels like it, but most of the time remains mysterious.
This is just my opinion, based on my own experiences. Not putting down what helps others.
