It’s been a while since we’ve talked about what we are reading. Be it for pleasure or meditation, let’s hear it and talk about some authors and titles that we like.
I’m reading How to Murder Your Life by Cat Marnell. It’s a page turner. A memoir of a drug and alcohol fueled rise and fall in the NYC fashion media market.
I’ve also recently finished My Fair Junkie by Amy Dresner and We are the Luckiest by Laura McKowen. They both did episodes of Sober Voices on the app, and both books were excellent.
As for morning meditation reading, I’m honestly loving working straight out of the NA Workbook. Their guidance through the steps is appealing to me. It’s more straightforward and approachable than the 12 & 12. Shout out to Melissa, one of the OG’s on here, for the recommendation.
I'm reading Metro 2034 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
I had to look it up. Looks like a pretty intense read. Post apocalyptic Russian lit. Damn.
The games based off of the book are great too. The author was involved with every step of the writing process
I never got into gaming but that sounds great. I’ll ask my nephews. Forgive my ignorance but is it an Xbox thing? What age range is it appropriate for?
Xbox and playstation. It's for older kids, maybe like 14,15.
Ah oh well. He’s 11. He’ll have to wait
Hello
I’m struggling with the AA steps. I know they’re not supposed to be easy but something is not clicking. What’s the difference between the two and how do I get an NA workbook? I’m new to recovery and was completely ignorant to the whole concept before I started my journey.
I ordered mine off the NA website.
Yesterday I finished The Weight of Air by David Poses. Great Book. Powerful journey through opiate addiction. He is not a 12 stepper. He in an advocate for harm reduction. Easy quick read. I recommend it.
Do you have a sponsor? Are you going to live meetings or zoom?
No I don’t have a sponsor. I do zoom meetings but I want to start going to in person meetings because zoom is not secure. I have been on zoom meetings where random dudes pop in and flash us. Not what I want to see in AA lol. I started sobering up in 2020 so I am zoom baby right now.
I would urge live meetings. That is my preference based upon the effectiveness I feel, but to each their own.
I got sober in 2020 too. 5.31.2020, but it was a long time coming.
Read the book, Living Sober. It’s an AA book that is a quick easy read and offers some great insight on existing sober in your former drinking world while you get yourself in a good program
I will. Thank you Craig.
Congratulations! Any relapses? Just asking because I wouldn’t listen or learn so I relapsed 3 times in 4 months with visits to the hospital/ER. I actually left Rehab after 3 days. First big mistake.
I have not relapsed since then. But I have had a few previously on other attempts at sobriety.
I am reading a book called Drink, the intimate relationship between women and alcohol.
This book is fantastic. Like, a must read for women. And a man who has a wife, GF or daughter would be extremely well served by reading it. It’s part autobiographical, part research paper/presentation. It’s honest. It names sources.
