Loosid Sober Tip of the Day December 11

Understanding powerlessness.

When we say we are powerless over alcohol or substances, it’s important to understand what this means as powerlessness is often perceived as negative or ‘weak’.

Many of us think it means we are not strong enough. We don’t have enough will power. Others amongst us think if we are tough enough, we can beat it. We just need to try harder.

So we try again. We will do better next time… and then the next.

We are baffled as no matter how hard we try it simply doesn’t work. Or, for others, it works… until it doesn’t.

What you need to know is powerlessness IS the very power that allows us to get better.

It is accepting the fact that we have a disease. Once we understand that we have a disease, we realize IT IS NOT OUR FAULT.

Powerlessness over alcohol is the same as if you had diabetes and were powerless over your body’s ability to produce insulin. Your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should.

You can also be in incredible shape and have high blood pressure.

Despite the fact we are powerless whether we have diabetes or high blood pressure, there is effective treatment for both.

Here’s the great news…

If you are an alcoholic or addict, know that it is 100% treatable as well.

The first step, however, is to accept that you are powerless, only then will you be ready to accept treatment to get better.

True.

Thank you for posting this. I’ve struggling with reading AA literature because of the verbiage. You explained this wonderfully! Will try again to start reading and maybe doing step work.

I was powerless for sure. I trying the “controlled drinking” more times than I care to remember. It was only when I stepped into AA and finally became honest with myself and found the willingness to try something different. For me willingness was key to making the change necessary for me to overcome my powerlessness over alcohol. If you’re new to this just be easy on yourself and find the needed willingness to change.

I came to that realization of being powerless.
I said those 3 words loud and clear, I need help!!! I am sober and love each Day more and more. Thanks Loosid for your help in my recovery!

The key! Plain and simple!

Powerlessness over alcohol/drugs/whatever it is and that our lives had become unmanageable! Sounds like step 1!
For me this step crucial step in recovery is huge to really grasp and understand. I looked at my life honestly at that time and was shocked just how unmanageable my life was. Alcohol had power over all rational decisions.
If alcohol or drugs or whatever else you are doing is more important then anything that’s healthy or family or friends then most likely you’ve become powerless. If you can’t manage your life without complications or repercussions from drinking or using then most likely your powerless over your Alcoholism/addiction. Once I came to believe that I was powerless and that my life was unmanageable I had an overwhelming feeling that I was in the right room. That room was Alcoholics Anonymous.
