Loosid Sober Tip of the Day December 22

Compare and despair.

Yesterday, we talked about how important it is to identify with the feelings and never to compare stories.

Comparing ourselves to others is a trap that too many people in recovery find themselves.

When we compare ourselves to others, we lose sight of the entire reason why we are in recovery… to connect with likeminded others who share our common bond.

Comparison is the death of happiness. We must look toward others with hope and, for those who may be sicker than others, we must choose empathy.

When we compare, we either feel worse about ourselves or we feel better than others. Self-pity or ego. Either path is the wrong path.

Make a commitment today to not compare yourself to others. You are exactly where you need to be.

I love this. Sometimes when I hear how long a recovered addict has been sober, I feel a little sinking in my heart because that’s not me. I always feel terrible after that too because I should be happy for them, the way I would want them to be happy for me. That feeling just takes me out of the present moment and lowers my self esteem. Comparison really is the thief of joy. In reality everyone’s path is so unique it doesn’t even make sense to compare anyone to another. Especially regarding sobriety because the struggle takes place on a spiritual level where we’re all equals. It’s so important for us to have empathy for others and ourselves in this experience so we can heal and allow ourselves to be healed.
