Loosid Sober Tip of the Day February 5

Moving from being sober to getting sober requires us to start working a spiritual program.

We have removed the ‘spirits’ and need to replace it with spirituality.

In 12-Step Groups, this consists of Unity (meetings and fellowship), Service (to others), and the 12 steps.

Whatever the spiritual program, you need to enter it quickly. If we sit in the seat of sobriety and not embark on a spiritual program, we will stay in pain.

If you have questions on what to do, ask in the comment section below. The Loosid community is here to help you.

If you have been sober for a while and are working a spiritual program, help the newcomers by sharing your experience below.

There are many people in the Loosid community who need to hear what you have to say.

With Love, Loosid

Good morning! trying my best to stay away from this poison. I am not into the 12 steps program; tried a while ago to treat my former issue of overeating… I was able to do it on my own.
I need a suggestion of how to overcome cravings …..A prayer/ a meditation… something
Thanks

Hi, I highly recommend the book “ SEEKING WISDOM A Spiritual Path to Creative Connection by Julia Cameron. She has been in recovery for decades and written many books over the decades. For me her books especially this one have been invaluable to me and my spirituality

Hi, same here. Not doing the twelve steps, and overcame a rather bad eating disorder some twenty years ago, also on my own. As for cravings: I just let them come and go. I find observing them without engaging with them effectively cuts them down to size. Meditation helps too, or going on a walk.

Do whatever it takes to keep the initial momentum going. It’s easy to fall back into old thought patterns. I try to avoid that by reading and posting about sobriety every day, and journaling. I’m lucky that my life is not very stressful atm, so I’m doing well without meetings and such. That said I’m happy to add that to my toolbox if I should get stuck.

A good start is actually verbalizing the fact you are having cravings. It moves the thought from our instinctual or "reptilian" part of the brain to the processing part of the brain where we can actually process the thought/craving. Verbalize it, no matter how small of a deal you think it is. Never minimize. For some of us it is life or death. Even journaling about it as well. Just moving it to that part of the brain we are more likely to play the tape through. I've had 5 years sober and still had cravings time to time in the end, I am an addict/alcoholic, that is normal behavior for me. The problem is we tend to think it is not normal and beat ourselves up when we have cravings. I relapsed after 5 years because of complacency, not continuing to do the things that worked for me in the beginning because it seemed I had a handle on "it" but if we stop working on ourselves and stop looking introspectively we will fall back into old patterns and behaviors. Constant contact with our higher power, helping others so we get outside of ourselves and continuing to take personal inventory is what always worked for me. Remember that the drugs and alcohol are only a symptom of our disease, it is our stinkin thinkin that is the problem. Hope this helps you as much as it just helped me lol.

I am in a 12 step program, I have a sponsor, I have a home group, I work the steps, I'm of service to others, and I attend 4-5 meeting's a week every week no matter what. My higher power GOD, the program and the the men and women in the fellowship have and continue to save my life daily. This is not a program of convenience it is an every day program and I must give back whenever possible to the next addict seeking freedom.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m new to recovery. New to the awareness that I’m an alcoholic. I’m 16 days sober. I’m a deeply spiritual person, pray daily, meditate often and put my faith in a higher power. However, I definitely feel that working a program is essential. My issue is that I don’t know where/how to start?
