Loosid Sober Tip of the Day January 14

What is the quality of your sobriety?

In recovery, many people get fixated on the amount of sober time they have and compare it to others. As mentioned in a previous sober tip, the world record for sobriety is 24 hours and nobody has broken it yet!

Much like it’s never about the amount of years in one’s life, but rather the amount of life in one’s years, the same applies to sobriety.

Putting down the drink or the drug only allows us to enter a spiritual journey that we call recovery. Working a spiritual program allows us to be free from all the things that used to hold us back.

We often find people in recovery with only months of ‘sobriety time’ who are happy, joyous and free. Most often, this is because they actively work a spiritual program and, as a result, have what many people call ‘emotional sobriety’.

On the other side, there are many who have decades of ‘sober time’ who are miserable and still stuck in the bondage of self.

Freeing ourselves requires work, but the great news we all have the ability to achieve that freedom.

Find solace in the fact that you can be free any time you want. Choose freedom today. You deserve it.

I need to know: What does “the world record for sobriety is 24 hours” even mean??! I’ve seen it a couple times now and am lost.

I’m puzzled by that too😉

Maybe the world record of 24 hours means that just one day is just as much an achievement as one week, one month, one year?

That’s a good theory! I’m anxious to see what the answer is.

It refers to the mindset of AA which I have found really helpful after three years of sobriety. When you wake up in the morning, you have 24 hours to choose to stay sober. It’s not about tomorrow, it’s not about the day before. It’s a way of managing sobriety so it doesn’t get overwhelming and you’re staying in the present moment. 24 hours. Then when you go to bed at night, you have another day in your pocket. (And celebrate)

One day at a time.

I prefer "Make it to midnight". It sounds more badass and it's less cliche.

Also sobriety is simply the lack of alcohol. There is no quality to it. The better question is how is your recovery going? This asks about the whole purpose because alcoholism is both a medical condition which is rarely even discussed in any depth and a behavioral matter which is all anybody ever seems to treat. Most people don't even know that when an alcoholic (which by the way is a terrible label and should be gotten rid of) drinks they get up to seven times the dopamine release in their brain as a normal person. What does that mean? Well they've done testing and when drinking some alcoholics receive more dopamine than a non alcoholic ever will. In their life. Ever. That's why the quality of your recovery needs to be high and needs to be both medical and behavioral.

24 hrs! All we have today! Make it count!

Sometimes “ even “ midnight feels too overwhelming. Minute by minute is all which has ever seemed to work for me? The whole bringing in the word “ lifetime “ is too overwhelming for some of us.
