Loosid Sober Tip of the Day January 4

A disease that tells us we don’t have a disease.

The diseases of alcoholism and addiction are both diseases that trick us into thinking that we don’t have a disease. Although the jury has been ‘in’ for a very long time, it still tries to pull the wool over our eyes.

Addiction does not occur because of moral weakness, a lack of willpower or an unwillingness to stop.

There has been decades of work investigating the effects of substance use on the brain.

Here are the facts:

  1. In 1956, the American Medical Association (AMA) declared alcoholism an illness
  2. in 1987, the AMA and other medical organizations officially termed addiction a disease.
  3. Alcoholism, as defined by The American society of Addiction Medicine, is “a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking and preoccupation with the drug alcohol.”
  4. The definition also states that alcoholism is often progressive and fatal.

So why do millions of people still think it’s not a disease?

Well, one reason is because of lack of information. We simply have not read the above; what the medical community has concluded through decades of research.

Another reason is because our disease tells us so.

Still another reason for this is because there has been a stigma that has been created by people who are not properly armed with the facts that both alcoholism and addiction are not diseases, and it is these false stigmas that kill tens of millions of people every year.

If you are amongst the many who believe you have a lack of willpower, or have shame or guilt wondering why you cannot control or ‘handle’ your drinking or drug use the way others can, take solace in the fact that the science is in and this could not be further from the truth.

It is a disease and is not your fault.

Here’s the great news. Your disease is 100% treatable provided that you work a spiritual program of recovery.

How did this tip resonate with you? Let us know your thoughts below. There are many people in the Loosid community who need to hear what you have to say.

So true I have family members who still believe that before j stopped drinking 3 1/2 years ago was a choice I made not s disease to some point that’s true for me because I knew I had alcoholism yet I chose to not call my sponsor till after I had a drink at times romantasizing that I will just get a glow on and go right back to Mtgs next day I guess at that moment it was telling me maybe I really don’t have a disease but deep down I knew !!! But certain family members always thought it was just choice I’m prob not making sense but this is soo true!!!!! Just like diabetes and cancer

I believe you can get help and I’m in treatment. I’m dedicated to maintaining my sobriety. I don’t work the steps, maybe that will change with time or maybe it won’t. I struggled with the concept that it’s a disease. I’m thinking that’s because of the stigma. I’m trying to understand it better.

I still don't understand the "work a spiritual recovery" aspect. Is that part of the medical literature? Last time I checked, science had not located a "spirit" in human beings.

I believe we are chosen to live a more righteous life. As we become more aware of the fact the God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves our lives become manageable. When see life for what it is. The actual beauty. Our purpose. We can then begin to appreciate our disease. I don’t feel cursed because I can’t drink like others. I actually feel more connected to those around me, to the world, to God. Thank you sobriety! It’s truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

I think it’s 100% treatable if you abstain. However you can do that…..

The spiritual recovery is working the steps, understanding there is a power greater than yourself, whatever that power is for you and realizing you must yield to that power and work to heal your soul. Yes we have a disease that science backs, and we must seek the cure in a spiritual way not as in the spirit of “God” as many know it but your spirit, your soul, your being and how you react to situations and how you deal with life. Sone people see it easier that way in the beginning. The point is, have faith in something, anything that helps you see there is a greater force than our own and we can and should depend on it. It calls for sone interpretation and not being argumentative or caught up in the semantics of the wording
