Loosid Sober Tip of the Day October 7

Understanding powerlessness.

When we say we are powerless over alcohol or substances, it’s important to understand what this means as powerlessness is often perceived as negative or ‘weak’.

Many of us think it means we are not strong enough. We don’t have enough will power. Others amongst us think if we are tough enough, we can beat it. We just need to try harder.

So we try again. We will do better next time… and then the next.

We are baffled as no matter how hard we try it simply doesn’t work. Or, for others, it works… until it doesn’t.

What you need to know is powerlessness IS the very power that allows us to get better.

It is accepting the fact that we have a disease. Once we understand that we have a disease, we realize IT IS NOT OUR FAULT.

Powerlessness over alcohol is the same as if you had diabetes and were powerless over your body’s ability to produce insulin. Your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should.

You can also be in incredible shape and have high blood pressure.

Despite the fact we are powerless whether we have diabetes or high blood pressure, there is effective treatment for both.

Here’s the great news…

If you are an alcoholic or addict, know that it is 100% treatable as well.

The first step, however, is to accept that you are powerless, only then will you be ready to accept treatment to get better.

To say one is powerless! A hard one to accept. But when you do realize that you can get treatment and help, just like other diseases, it is also a freeing blessing.

While I’m not happy to be an alcoholic, my disease does have a cure.

Powerlessness is what I am focusing in as I work my first step! Thank you for this tip!

There are a lot of things I’m powerless over. Doesn’t mean I’m weak or a failure. It simply means I can’t do it alone. More hands make less work. I’m powerless over alcohol, meth, nicotine and caffeine. However when I put these substances inside my body I become powerless over their effects. I can’t control what happens to my body when they are inside me. That’s what I consider Powerlessness. For me to take back the power I have to consciously make a decision to not put those substances into my body. This is where the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous has helped me. A splash of faith in the beginning of my sobriety has turned into a full on quest to understand Spirituality. Writing down my resentments, fears and Sex conducted in order for me to better see the person I was has shed some light on who I am today and where I would like to go tomorrow. Basically a complete personality change had to be made and is now ever growing. I have excepted I’m powerless over alcohol and other substances. I have excepted there is a power greater then myself which will restore me to sanity. Today I’m not weak, I have courage to make a conscious decision to change my attitude and outlook on my life and my life only. Thank you Loosid!

Amen
