Some other similar apps have group features that search regionally for members. I see so many posts about loneliness (myself included) and needing more sober friends/outlets. The only thing close on LOOSID is the dating feature which has always been empty for my area… and not everyone wants to date, especially women who get bombarded with A-holes. What can be done to help people connect locally? This would need to be a large radius as some of us live rurally. What do you think?
I don't see a dating feature on here?
Go to your home page and in the lower left is the menu icon. It will take you there. It’s cool they have it, but I don’t think it’s used much.
Dating without dating 101:
-
Stop looking. Just talk to people, be genuine in your comments, and not people pleasing to garner "numbers". Every guy on here agrees with every dumb thing a woman says just to hopefully "score". To all of you dudes out there that have made female connections because you took the opposite of my opinion on a woman's thread, you're welcome. Bottom feeder behavior. Guess what? Nobody likes a kiss a$$.
-
Stop talking about how lonely you are. Nobody wants to hang out with a depressing, mess. Talking about how lonely you are screams "stay away, I'm a stage 5 clinger".
-
Stop posting pics of you holding a fish. Seriously. Don't.
-
Be adventurous. Start driving to bigger cities and going to meetings there, and network. Be genuine and if someone likes your flavor, they will talk to you. Easy. Just be real. Be nice. Wear clean shoes, and deodorant. Be genuinely nice and polite, not simply because you want a date, this is obvious to women and I'm sure it's annoying as heII.
I'll think of some more. For now, clean shoes, be genuine.
It’s a cool site for sure. I use it as a fill in between meetings. Keeps me grounded. My meetings are my outlet to meet others. Works for me.
Well as you know, dating should be the last thing on ones mind when in beginning stages of recovery anyway. You can't work on yourself if you are worried what another is doing.
I think the dating feature was a bad idea.
Not disagreeing but a regional group feature by state or metro would be nice. I’m not looking for a date.
I’m not looking to date, just network with people more locally but thanks for the input.
I get it man. I feel bad for you guys and girls out there that don't have that many meetings etc in the small towns. It's gotta be rough.
It is, I used to drive 45 min each way for a year or so until we got meetings going locally twice a week. I used to live in Chicago and after that St. Louis … I moved to the country to get away from all that. The only downside is fewer meetings/options. But there’s work arounds for that.
Yea it would
Agree. I live in a huge city and I’m still psyched when I see someone on here who is near me.
I agree 1000% percent.
I live in a small town too. We do have meetings everyday, but there isn’t a lot of long term sobriety here. I found my current sponsor at a convention after my old sponsor didn’t have time for me anymore. She insisted that I go to literature meetings, so I resorted to the online intergroup. I have met great supports here! Browse the Directory of Online Meetings | Online Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous
There is another app that has this feature, Sober Grid. Check it out
Thanks Dan, it was actually SG I was mentioning in my OP about other apps. I think it’s a good feature and doesn’t have the creep factor of “dating”.
Thank you Dan I appreciate that share
Skot I am in central Illinois and I agree this app has pluses and minuses and you have put your finger on a valid point. It may change if they keep it from becoming too chaotic and I hope so. But I find AA meeting more focused and I value it for self work. Sometimes opinion is stated as fact there too but there are built in ways and traditions to balance and moderate that in AA
It’s easier to go after a bigger membership and market share in cities but the best resources will usually emerge over time or through niches perhaps.
That my opinion and I will own it.
