Right now I have been struggling a lot with my mental health. Just trying to stay afloat in recovery has been exhausting and overwhelming. I want to be able to open up and talk about my feelings but I just don’t trust people because of all the hurt and pain I endured before. Seems like every time I open up people use what I said against me. Or that people really just don’t want me around. Lately I’ve been compulsively eating and isolating. I feel like things are just going to cave in on me. I need help. This is me taking the courage to ask for help.
Is there any local group in recovery that you can reach out to? I know it’s hard to find local people I’ve been struggling myself. I am going to a workout event with The Phoenix . Download the app and check out the local events they have
There are some of us that suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders, but many of us do recover IF we have the capacity to be honest.
I can't forget my alcoholism never rests or takes a break. It pops up in new ways to steal my peace and serenity today. It uses my mental illnesses against me to isolate and shackle me in the bondage uniqueness by making me feel like there is no one that can possibly understand what's in my head or that people would run if only they knew what I was thinking.
How untrue that's been in my experience. Sharing those things with my sponsor and getting into the solution always recenters me and tapping into that Grace of God removes me from self pity and self-centeredness.
I pray you keep coming back to the rooms and practicing these principals in all of your affairs. You're not alone and God as we understand Him is right there waiting for you to rely upon it.
God will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Pause, pray, reach out to another alcoholic/addict, and proceed. We no longer have to do this alone and that's a miracle!
,
I'm sorry your struggling mentally. It is hard to manage at times especially trying to handle all the emotions sober. Have you sought out some sort of therapy or possibly consider reading a self help book? I know that sounds so cliche, but since you had mentioned you are self isolating, maybe use that time to your advantage? I remember beginning with reading unf*ck yourself by Gary John Bishop (quick read) and it really put things into perspective for me-really challenged my way of thinking on self deprecating... and trust me, don't feel like you can't talk about your feelings because you can. Majority of the time it's all in our head when thoughts of burden come to mind. Hope this helps ? Wish you all the best
.
I’ve been feeling the exact same way lately.
People that haven't gone through it or family are usually the worst people to confide in unfortunately.
I don't even talk to my daughter's mom about my mental struggles.
You have to find someone more neutral, like someone on here.
Hope you find the help you need.
Here are a few strategies that help me cope w depression :
. Once I get up I immediately make the bed. I complete a task and am motivated to build on that and do more
. Shower ASAP. If I don’t I procrastinate. Gets me going. Cleanse yourself of any depressive emotions !
. Get out of the house
. Get to the gym. Pack a change of clothes w the expectation that you’ll sweat through what you wear there. Don’t forget headphones !
. Hit the market. Daily shopping leads me to always have fresh produce and always keep healthy food in the house
. Keep an activity journal and note what tasks make you happy. Make it a point to do those things more regularly (got that from my therapist)
I isolate often. But if I follow these strategies I get to the market and the gym at the very least. I’m way more social when I’m exercising, listening to music and eating well
Is this currently my daily routine ? I wish. But I’ve done it w more frequency in the past and have been truly happy and much less depressed. RN I do these things as often as I can and try not to be too hard on myself when I don’t
Hi Dylan !! Same thing here my mental issues aka anxiety and trauma leads me to drink … I found that the less I drink the clearer my head is to focus on the root of my problems to help with drinking … drinking masks the real reasons … I have help through online therapy ..
I tried for years to get it through my insurance but here in nyc especially after the pandemic it was impossible!!! I use BetterHelp they are affordable and based on your income … I’m not sure about other platforms but this one worked for me !!
This way you are able to talk about your feelings without the mess involved with other non professionals… this platform is great too !! Good luck you can do this !!
Amen
