Motivated not by masochism, false modesty, or low self-esteem, but by gratitude, they grew into an ever-deepening awareness that their passion for Christ, their heroic life of prayer, and their unstinting generosity in ministry were all unmerited gifts. They also grew to realize how often they forgot their giftedness. The parable of the merciless debtor clearly states that we sin against God if we fail to forgive the petty grievances of our neighbor. But the truth is that we sin every day, whenever we fail to be grateful to God for his manifold gifts.
