My current struggle is sitting in all of the feelings

My current struggle is sitting in all of the feelings I had been numbing away with alcohol before. I almost feel they’re more intense bc I avoided them.

What is the best way to feel, process emotions and then LET THEM GO?

Surrender and cry.

Feelings start with a thought. Step back, take a look at the thought,or situation that triggered the feelings. Why did you feel or react as you did in the moment? Sometimes I don't find immediate answers. But that minute I take, to breathe and just stop, help. Sometimes I know I can't change my reaction. Again a breath and be set in how I do want to be and feel from here on out. Something's you just have to turn over and leave behind. Hang in there, it does get better.

Accept the fact you deserve to experience feelings. Then instead of numbing them, take action to make whatever changes are needed to not feel them or feel them more.. you can't change the past, but today you can make changes for the future.

I understand completely and feel they have become more intense dealing with them now

I use to drink because the feelings I had were too much for me to deal with. They are still too much for me to deal with and I no longer have alcohol to deaden the impact. That is when I am reminded that I do not keep me sober, we do. I can sort through this stuff by myself. That sort of thinking got me drunk. So now I take advantage of resources like this community, meetings, friends, professional expertise. Ask for help. You may find it in the most unlikeliest of places.

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful responses!

Find someone who will listen and not judge you. I used to hide my shit behind a nice glass of bourbon. I don’t face them alone. I’ve been sober for 15 months and I’m still dealing with stuff that caused me to drink. Keep your circle small and do your best to avoid negative influences.

I embrace pain as much as possible. It takes strength and I’m not strong everyday.

Man that part is so hard. Hang in there. For me quitting drinking was hard but replacing unhealthy coping with healthier coping is a seemingly endless challenge. Luckily there are millions of books and YouTube speakers and Instagram support pages and apps like this to help us now that we know better than to believe the lies that addiction tell us.

Its rough. I have a therapist and that helps me a lot. I also journal. Im also religious and I pray. I know these things arent for everyone and i dont want to push anyone into those things. But the biggest thing is letting yourself feel things and to be patient and kind to yourself. Having a healthy support system also helps a lot. Letting yourself feel is important as you couldnt express them before and maybe youre ready to let it out. And hopefully in time those things wont be so heavy and you can let them go. But it does take time. As well as a bit of effort from yourself. Be kind to yourself. And remmeber that you are allowed to express yourself

It sometimes sucks to actually feel. We used to numb our feelings by getting drunk or high. The thing is for me the feeling just came back after the hang over or I came down. I’m glad you chatting on here. Stay clean and sober things will get better!
