My husband is in rehab for alcohol and opioids. He is now doing well without either. Looking for support snd help what I can do to help him be successful in staying sober
Good morning Julie, I'm single and went through my out patient living by myself. I don't say alone because my family and friends are beside me. Encourage him to go to AA or NA and join a support group like this one. I preferred subtle encouragement. I don't know you or husband but I had to figure it out myself that I can't partake not even once. Don't give up you both can do this. I think the hard part is over. just be there for him and yourself. The rehab I went to had a class for next of kin. You may look into that. AA by me has open sessions. Try those because you are on this also. But you are not alone. Reach out anytime.
Hi Julie! I recommend finding a local Al-Anon or Nar-Anon group, they are support groups for families of alcoholics/addicts and they can be really big helpl to navigate these stormy waters. https://al-anon.org/ and https://www.nar-anon.org/
Be very mindful about his surroundings, things that may trigger him. Find activities too that both of you can do sober. Look into vivitrol or naltrexone. They help with cravings for both alcohol and opioids. They are not subs.
Thanks for the info. I’ll check out those meds with his dr
Thank you for your thoughts. I have found a support group and plan on checking out Al-non with a friend in the same situation
Thanks for advice. His plan is to go to AA. I’ve been to those meetings with another friend. The rehab is supposed to have classes but my visit yesterday was just a visit- no class. I’ve done a lot of reading snd listen to podcast. I also attend a support group Wednesday ARP
I have been listening to a podcast called Love Over Addiction. It’s helped me understand somethings. It brings me comfort
That is great!! I do a lot of recovery through mindfulness/spiritual and recovery videos and podcasts. My thinking needs the work as well.
Help him build a support system. Rehab should give him a world of resources that you can help encourage him to use.
I’m happy for you two. I have gotten more of my foundation through the rooms of AA. I would also suggest that you can find help with others like your self in the rooms of Al-Anon.
Julie, be supportive and don’t be pissed when working on sobriety comes first at times. Be supportive and not critical, but keep him accountable. I asked my wife to call me on my bullshit. Hope this helps. AA is a great start.
Thanks for bringing up not being pissed of sobriety comes first. I know it has to . I need to expect that and not think I’ll come first. This has been a great sight for help. Thanks so much
