My mind is not my friend today

Ugh. Thoughts. Emotions. There’s a storm brewing. I’m sitting in it as still as I can but this is rough. I know it will pass but as all of us have used or drank to get through the storms before I’m not very experienced with the sober version of this. I’m not going to drink. I’m using the tools I have. I’m going to meetings. Talking to people. I don’t know what else to do but it ****ing hurts right now. And it doesn’t even make sense. My world isn’t crashing. I’m in a safe place. People care about me. But just one bad thought, one challenge, one uncomfortable emotion and I can feel the enemy trying to talk me into it. The answer is “no sale”. I’m not buying what you are selling and I would appreciate it if you would back the **** up . Any way I don’t know if anyone has any advice but I could use anything right now. Even just encouragement. Not today Satan :expressionless:.

Sounds familiar. Usually I can work out and feel better but I hurt myself yesterday and lifting weights is almost impossible. I’m going insane, today, too. You’re not alone.

I’m sorry you are going through it too

Think of it this way… you recognize it. You have reached out, and made the deal with yourself to stay sober. That is a HUGE win! Be proud! We all have the creeping thoughts and emotions. Learning to sit and process them is all part of winning at sobriety. You did good!

I understand believe me, I feel the tug to have a drink. I moved back to Michigan after being gone 30 years, although my sister is here my grand illusions of reunification with old friends has gone largely unfulfilled as everyone including my sister seems to busy… So you and I and so many here have to dig deep… I’m only on day 6.. I keep telling myself” Things seem grim but in reality they would be worse if (I) we drank.
Let’s stay the course … at least for today… tomorrow we can regroup and renew our commitment to just say no…:v:

Wow Aimee, you are doing amazingly well!! You pretty much nailed it as far as what’s going on and what to do while it passes thru! Now, you just gotta sit and get thru it. The alternative…actually there is no alternative!! You got this! You will be a little stronger when you come out of the other side of this :peace_symbol:

Thank you. I guess it just goes back to “it’s not easy, it’s necessary”

Your mind is not your friend at times

Feed it gratitude and facts! The safe space surrounded by supportive caring people you are blessed with during this time of change and healing

If it’s involving your ex; that’s your ego

Try to shut it out
I struggle with mine as well
Hanging on to the past increases the suffering
Which triggers our favorite copping skill

The ego tries to hold on to things to find identity and false strength when we are feeling susceptible, lonely, hurt etc

You sound like you got it on a cognitive level, spiritual / conscious awakening may be coming soon

Must be in the air at our women’s meeting tonight so many of us were dealing with the same thing it’s a scary thing when we get in our head anxiety starts rumbling and it’s hard to breathe but reaching out and talking about it is good because bottling it up is no bueno my sponsor actually fussed at me tonight because I was having exactly the same thoughts as you having all day and I didn’t pick up the phone and call her until the evening time because I wanted to do it my way and well you know my way didn’t work I was miserable and once I spoke to her I ended the phone call laughing and a smile on my face

and I would appreciate it if you would back the **** up :rofl::100: I love that spirit! I try and treat my interims of craving like that too. Not so much of a worthy, scary adversary but a meager, irritating fly. Show it the door and shoo it out. You're doing great Aimee!

My mind is never my friend, struggling with mental illness on top of addiction isn’t fun. I hope things get better for you. When you’re struggling talk to someone you can trust. Keeping the emotions bottled up destroys us.

Aimee, what step are you on?
When I took steps 1,2&3 honestly the obsession to drink was removed. Then the misery came flooding in as I was extremely resentful, fearful and depressed because of my past. I had to do my 4th and 5th step. I had some big relief from these steps. Then the misery came back as I was looking at my harms list. The fear of making amends to those I had harmed made me miserable. Then I prayed and meditated. Journaling has helped. Made my first amends! Boom the weight of the world felt lighter. I’ve made some big amends and can say that I’m no longer miserable. I’m walking a free man. Being of service to others, by Secretary a meeting, I have a home group, I Sponsor others, and continue to work the steps to the best of my ability.

Keep your head up. Work the steps. You may feel better 🤷. It’s worth a shot…

It sounds like you are doing everything that you need to do. Sobriety doesn’t fix your life directly. It gives you the time, clarity and presence to make the changes you need to make. If you question whether or not it’s working, look back a week, 2 weeks, and a month.

You’re doing great.

Yes I have been putting off step 4. That is why I still have the resentments

I see. Well I’m glad you can see you have a resentment.. that’s a start. If you need a good spreadsheet try step12.com
Dallas B. Has provided us with great worksheets on the 4th and 8th step. Makes it very easy for me to write them out. He takes all of the stuff from the big book and organizes it beautifully for us…
I’ll continue to pray for your healing my friend

Russell Brand has a great quote about the 4th step in his book.

“it took me 5 years and 2 days to finish my 4th step. 5 years to procrastinate and 2 days to write it”

Yes the storms and challenges in life  I see you are working on keeping focused on your sobriety :+1: awesome for you / the troubles will pass. For me - I never drank to deal. I drank for fun until it wasn’t. So now when issues come up I know that I won’t drink - my challenge is to quiet my mind. Often being around other sober people (meetings) and giving it up to God is my way of getting through the hard times.
