My sobriety is built partially on the bones of addicts/alcoholics

My sobriety is built partially on the bones of addicts/alcoholics around me. Some of them are my siblings and closest friends, others I've met around the tables. Sheesh, what a thing to realize and accept.

Their behaviors helped us realize what we are. Seen ourselves in their using. Helps brings us to sobriety. That and hitting our bottoms. True statement.

Yesterday I was on the phone with a friend of 30 years who has been back and forth with sobriety that whole time. She's drinking and just recently quit a very good job. She's a mess. Very unhappy. And I realized after I got off the phone with her, I would be her if I weren't sober. The choices I've made in sobriety, including leaving relationships with active alcoholics, has made my life so much better.... And I realized it hard after she and I got off the phone. I hope sobriety for her and thank my HP for mine.

I’ve heard this from an AA friend of mine.

“We will either live sober and help other alcoholics or die drunk and help other alcoholics.”

I love the truth in that.
