My son who is newly sober (27 days) is experiencing horrible insomnia. What have you done personally to combat the sleepless nights?
See a doctor but tell them he is a recovering alcoholic
I’ve been sober for close to 3 years, have always slept horribly. Healthy diet, a regular workout routine we’re a huge help initially. The last year or so my diet and workout routines have fallen way off and now I’m only getting 3-4 hours of sleep each night. I know I need to get strict with a healthier routine but definitely easier said than done. This week I’ve been doing some of the sleep meditations and such on the insight app, has helped more than expected. Maybe have him attempt a combination of things🤷♂️
I took 100 mg trazodone for 3 months. It’s an antidepressant that also helps you sleep. It was recommended/prescribed by my dr and helped tremendously.
Now I take some melatonin when needed. But mostly once my restless mind eased up by working my 12 step program of recovery, my sleep dramatically improved.
I have never slept well in fact, I did use alcohol as a sleep aide most of the time when I was active in my addiction. Insomnia is one of the most common and longest lasting symptoms that many people experience when getting sober. There are several meds out there that a person can take for sleep aide but unfortunately, most are habit forming. Having a regular bed routine, daily exercise, healthy diet, and limit caffeine can help promote sleep.
This can be common in early recovery. It gets better. I was prescribed Seroquil. I like it better than trazadone because it doesn’t give me that groggy feeling the day after.
Everyone has different methods. I will give him all of your suggestions. He’s a stubborn guy though, so who knows what if any he will try. Thank you for commenting. I love being able to post a question and for the most part I get a response.
